Emerging treatment strategies in wound care

Marjan Mirhaj et al.

Summary: Wound healing is a complex process, and the current treatment strategies face challenges. Dressings and skin substitutes are the most effective, convenient, and cost-effective method for treating chronic wounds, and advances in materials science offer hope for treatment. There is a need to improve current treatment strategies to meet the increasing demands of the aging population and diabetes-related wounds.

Amelia Spinella et al.

Summary: In this study, the role and effectiveness of blue light photobiomodulation (PBM) therapy with EmoLED(R) in the treatment of scleroderma skin ulcers (SSc-SU) were evaluated. The results showed that EmoLED(R) therapy resulted in faster healing of ulcers and significant improvements in ulcer area, length, width, wound bed, and pain. The use of EmoLED(R) could be a promising tool in the management of SSc-SU.

Blue Light in Dermatology

Magdalena Sadowska et al.

Summary: Blue light therapy may induce anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative effects, which could be beneficial for treating hyperproliferative and chronic inflammatory skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis. Further studies are needed to develop accurate treatment protocols, as clinical effects depend on light parameters and treatment duration.

Summary: Recent advancements in biomaterials inspired by the extracellular matrix have shown promise in delivering bioactives for wound healing. Tailoring delivery systems for specific wound indications and healing phases, and controlling the delivery of GFs and cytokines, are critical for successful clinical translation. Further testing is needed to determine the most suitable wound indications for specific delivery systems and their efficacy compared to direct protein therapies.

Summary: Platelets enhance the therapeutic potential of MSCs by transferring mitochondria and promoting pro-angiogenic activity. Activation of the de novo fatty acid synthesis pathway is required for increased secretion of pro-angiogenic factors by platelet-preconditioned MSCs.
