Critical selection of shear sheltering in electroconvective flow from chaotic to steady state

Wei Liu et al.

Summary: This paper reveals the critical selection of shear velocity regarding the fluid from a chaotic to a steady state through numerical and theoretical analyses. It introduces the dimensionless Debye length and voltage difference to achieve a comprehensive discussion of the factors affecting the shear vortex state. Furthermore, a critical shear velocity is proposed to distinguish the electroconvective flow from a chaotic state to a steady state for ionic fluid control by shear flow.

Selective recovery of carboxylic acid through PVDF blended anion exchange membranes using electrodialysis

Priyabrata Mandal et al.

Summary: Selective transport of carboxylic acids (acetic, AA; malic, MA; and citric, CA) from their equimolar ternary mixture was investigated through electrodialysis. The study found that BM-2 membrane exhibited higher selectivity for AA, which was attributed to its highest ion exchange capacity and ion conductivity.

Effect of the Parameters of Pulsed Electric Fields on the Average Current Density in the Electrodialysis Desalination of a Phosphate-Containing Solution

O. A. Rybalkina et al.

Summary: The effect of pulsed electric field (PEF) parameters on the period-average current densities in the electrodialysis desalination of sodium dihydrophosphate solutions has been studied for the first time. It has been shown that the PEF effect regularities in sodium dihydrophosphate solutions are generally the same as for strong electrolyte solutions. The visualization of electroconvective flows in lean solutions near an anion-exchange membrane surface reveals that the observed distinction in membrane system behavior is caused by weak electroconvection in phosphate-containing solutions. A hypothesis proposing the effect of pulsed electric field on the deprotonation of H2PO4- anions entering the anion-exchange membrane volume is put forward.

Non-negligible effects of reinforcing structures inside ion exchange membrane on stabilization of electroconvective vortices

Myungjin Seo et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of reinforcing structures on electroconvection near a membrane was investigated. Numerical simulations and experiments were conducted to demonstrate that the geometry of the reinforcements determines the alignment of electroconvection. The stabilization of electroconvection in a chaotic regime was also demonstrated through visualization and electrical measurements. The findings of this study are highly valuable for the design of energy-efficient and stable concentration polarization systems.

Efficient Anion-Exchange Membranes with Anti-Scaling Properties Obtained by Surface Modification of Commercial Membranes Using a Polyquaternium-22

Dmitrii Y. Butylskii et al.

Summary: In this study, anion-exchange membranes were modified with a polyquaternium-22 (PQ-22) polymer, which successfully replaced weakly basic amino groups with quaternary amino groups on the membrane surface. The modified membranes exhibited increased surface charge, higher current density, and reduced plateau length. The results showed that the modified membranes had improved resistance to scaling during electrodialysis.

Space-Charge breakdown phenomenon and spatio-temporal ion concentration and fluid flow patterns in overlimiting current electrodialysis

A. Kovalenko et al.

Summary: This study utilizes numerical simulations to investigate ion and water transport through EC in electrodialysis channels, and identifies the phenomenon of space-charge breakdown. This phenomenon leads to a decrease in EC vortices, resulting in a reduction of local current density and an upper limit on the possible increase in mass transfer rate by electroconvection.

Trade-Off between Operating Time and Energy Consumption in Pulsed Electric Field Electrodialysis: A Comprehensive Simulation Study

Manuel Cesar Marti-Calatayud et al.

Summary: Electrodialysis (ED) has been introduced in processes requiring resource recovery, providing sustainable production routes for a circular economy. Pulsed electric field (PEF) electrodialysis has been proven effective in modulating concentration polarization and reducing energy consumption, often achieved by extending operating time. The simulation study shows that increasing pulse frequency can reduce specific energy consumption, while varying duty cycle has opposing effects on time and energy usage in ED processes.

Suppression of electroconvective and morphological instabilities by an imposed cross flow of the electrolyte

Gaojin Li et al.

Summary: The study shows that a two-dimensional channel flow significantly affects the electroconvective instability, distorting the concentration field and hindering ion transport, effectively suppressing the EC instability. In addition, an imposed strong flow can fully suppress the EC instability and increase the critical voltage for instability onset, while having a smaller effect on the Morph instability.

Investigation of ion-exchange membranes by means of chronopotentiometry: A comprehensive review on this highly informative and multipurpose technique

Kayo Santana Barros et al.

Summary: Electrodialysis is commonly used in drinking water production and has found applications in new fields in recent years. Membrane characteristics and ion transport properties are crucial for the efficiency of electrodialysis, and studying ion transport across membranes is essential. Chronopotentiometry is a useful method to evaluate membrane transport properties and mass transfer phenomena.
