Evaluation of mass transfer behaviour of sulfamethoxazole species at ion-exchange membranes by chronopotentiometry for electrodialytic processes

Kayo Santana Barros et al.

Summary: In recent years, electrodialysis has been considered as an effective method for treating wastewater containing pharmaceutical compounds. However, the lack of information on ion transport mechanisms through membranes, especially regarding potential sorption phenomena, has hindered its practical implementation. This study evaluates the transport of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) through cation- and anion-exchange membranes using synthetic solutions at different concentrations and pH conditions. The results provide insight into mass transfer mechanisms and potential challenges in electrodialysis treatment of SMX-containing solutions.

Selective separation of volatile fatty acids, nitrogen and phosphorus from anaerobic acidogenic fermentation via forward osmosis membrane process

Xian-Zheng Zhu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of using a forward osmosis (FO) dewatering process to selectively separate volatile fatty acids (VFA), ammonium, and phosphate from anaerobic acidogenic fermentation. The results showed that the rejection rate of VFA was less than 20% under acidic conditions, but significantly increased to 90% at neutral pH. The transfer of ammonium was greatly influenced by feed solution pH, while the rejection of phosphate was less sensitive to pH variations. The increase in water flux and membrane orientation also affected the separation of nutrients in the FO process.

Recent advances in Donnan dialysis processes for water/wastewater treatment and resource recovery: A critical review

Hui Chen et al.

Summary: Donnan dialysis technology, with its low chemical and energy consumption, provides significant opportunities for enhancing contaminant removal and resource recovery in water and wastewater treatment. This critical review emphasizes the need for a consistent framework in the design and interpretation of Donnan dialysis systems and evaluates the impacts of solution properties, membrane characteristics, and system configuration. It also discusses the applications of Donnan dialysis for metal, nutrient, and other inorganic and organic chemical treatment and recovery. Recommendations for future studies are provided to address knowledge gaps and promote new opportunities. This critical review serves as an important resource for addressing grand challenges related to clean water and circular economies of essential elements.

Recovery of L-glutamic acid from ammonium glutamate by Donnan dialysis: Membrane characteristic and operation parameters

Rui Wang et al.

Summary: A proof-of-concept study on Donnan dialysis using cation-exchange membranes for recovering glutamic acid from ammonium glutamate was conducted, aiming for cleaner production without the need for adding sulfate acid directly to the fermentation broth. The study found that under optimized conditions, Donnan dialysis can achieve high conversion and removal rates, with successful recovery of glutamic acid and avoidance of high-ammonium sulfate wastewater generation.

Synthesis and physicochemical characterization of sulfonated polyketone ion exchange membrane using response surface methodology

Byoung-Min Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, the process parameters for synthesizing sulfonated polyketone in the preparation of ion exchange membranes were optimized using the response surface methodology. The properties of the membranes were evaluated, and it was found that the degree of sulfonation and swelling ratio were primarily affected by the sulfonating agent concentration, while water uptake and mechanical properties were predominantly affected by the reaction temperature.

Development of a new route for cation exchange membrane fabrication by using GO reinforced styrenated oil

Mehmet Semih Bingol et al.

Summary: A novel approach for fabricating cation exchange membranes (CEM) was developed using GO reinforced styrenated oil polymeric structure. The characteristics of the prepared membranes were investigated, and it was found that the GO-PS-oil-based membranes exhibited higher water absorption, ion exchange capacity, and electron conductivity compared to GO-only PS-based membranes. The results indicate that the newly fabricated CEM can be potentially used for electrodialysis applications.

Efficient Anion-Exchange Membranes with Anti-Scaling Properties Obtained by Surface Modification of Commercial Membranes Using a Polyquaternium-22

Dmitrii Y. Butylskii et al.

Summary: In this study, anion-exchange membranes were modified with a polyquaternium-22 (PQ-22) polymer, which successfully replaced weakly basic amino groups with quaternary amino groups on the membrane surface. The modified membranes exhibited increased surface charge, higher current density, and reduced plateau length. The results showed that the modified membranes had improved resistance to scaling during electrodialysis.

Electrodialysis for concentrating cobalt, chromium, manganese, and magnesium from a synthetic solution based on a nickel laterite processing route

G. C. Feijoo et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of electrodialysis for recovering cobalt, magnesium, manganese, and chromium ions from an acid multicomponent solution. Results showed successful extraction of Co2+, Mn2+, and Mg(2+) ions above 98%, while the extraction of Cr3+ reached only 83%. The differences in metal transport through the membranes were attributed to lower molar concentration, diffusion coefficient, and Stokes radius of chromium ions.

Mariana Matos et al.

Summary: This research demonstrated the importance of combining different effective strategies to maximize the performance of PHA production from fruit waste as a substrate. The results showed enhanced PHA production steps by tuning parameters like organic loading rate (OLR) and pH of the acidogenic reactor. The study achieved high global productivity and overall process yield, making it a promising step towards full-scale implementation of PHA production from wastes and MMC.
