A review of the microporous layer in proton exchange membrane fuel cells: Materials and structural designs based on water transport mechanism

Jingjing Zhang et al.

Summary: Proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have great potential for various applications, but efficient water management has not been thoroughly explored. This article summarizes recent progress in the materials and structural designs of the microporous layer (MPL) in PEMFCs, as well as investigations on water transport behaviors. The influence of key parameters of MPL and the use of advanced fabrication and characterization techniques are discussed, providing insights into preventing water flooding and membrane dehydration.

Investigating temperature-driven water transport in cathode gas diffusion media of PEMFC with a non-isothermal, two-phase model

Summary: The study focuses on the impact of temperature distribution on water transport in proton exchange membrane fuel cells through phase-change-induced flow. A non-isothermal, two-phase model is used to investigate water transport in different layers of the fuel cell. The results show that adjusting operating temperature and humidity can optimize water management and enhance the proportion of phase-change-induced flow in the porous layers.

Stochastically Modeled Gas Diffusion Layers: Effects of Binder and Polytetrafluoroethylene on Effective Gas Diffusivity

Lijun Zhu et al.

Summary: An improved stochastic reconstruction method has been developed for the gas diffusion layer (GDL) of proton exchange membrane fuel cell to enhance the accuracy in evaluating effective gas diffusivity. Carbon fibers are generated using a stochastic algorithm, and constraints such as structural characteristics, porosity distribution, and fiber orientation distribution are set in the microstructure reconstruction. The pore-scale simulations show that the reconstructed GDL with binder and PTFE results in a significant decrease in effective gas diffusivity.

Optimization of cathode microporous layer materials for proton exchange membrane fuel cell

Bing Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the impact of different carbon blacks on the formation of cathode MPL for proton exchange membrane fuel cells was investigated. It was found that single cells prepared with a mixture of Acetylene black (ACET) and Vulcan XC-72R showed promising power generation performance, while replacing Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) with polyvinylidene fluoride hexafluoropropylene copolymer P(VDF-HFP) as a hydrophobic binder led to a decrease in single cell performance. This study provides valuable insights for material optimization of MPL to enhance fuel cell performance.

Effect of wettability heterogeneity and compression on liquid water transport in gas diffusion layer coated with microporous layer of PEMFC

Summary: This study applied the pseudo-potential Lattice Boltzmann method to investigate liquid water transport in polymer electrolyte fuel cell. The research focused on the impact of hydrophilic carbon fibers in the gas diffusion layer on water saturation level and steady-state time, showing that they can lead to the formation of discontinuous water clusters. The presence of hydrophilic fibers may have both positive and negative effects on water transport in the GDL.

A rheological approach to studying process-induced structural evolution of the microporous layer in a proton exchange membrane fuel cell

Shirin Mehrazi et al.

Summary: The relationship between the primary agglomerate structure in the ink and the morphological and surface properties of the dried layer is studied based on rheological properties. Samples with higher PTFE loading have a more inhomogeneous microstructure and form highly percolated agglomerates after coating. The microporous layer with a solid content of 10 wt.% and a PTFE loading of 25 wt.% is found to have an optimal morphology for oxygen transport under both dry and wet conditions. This study provides new insight into the optimization of microporous layer design and development.

Summary: Adequate mechanical compression is crucial for enhancing the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells, leading to significant deformation of the gas diffusion layer and channel intrusion. A compression strain ratio of 20% is found to achieve optimal performance balancing between high contact resistance caused by low compression and high transport resistance due to high compression.

Pore-scale modeling of gas diffusion layers: Effects of compression on transport properties

Lijun Zhu et al.

Summary: A pore-scale simulation approach combining PSM and LBM was developed for studying the effects of mechanical compression on gas diffusion layer of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell. It was found that compressing the GDL led to increased electric and thermal conductivities, but decreased gas diffusivity and water permeability. The in-plane transport properties were greater than the through-plane properties, with anisotropy decreasing with higher compression ratios. The study also showed that compression affected the local current density and diffusion limitations in cell performance.
