Molecularly targeted nanomedicine enabled by inorganic nanoparticles for atherosclerosis diagnosis and treatment

Xiuwen Zhang et al.

Summary: This review article highlights the recent progress in the development of molecularly targeted nanomedicine for imaging detection and treatment of atherosclerosis using inorganic nanoparticles. By delivering imaging contrast nanoparticles to specific molecules in atherogenesis, atherosclerotic plaque development at different stages can be identified and monitored through various molecular imaging modalities. Molecularly targeted therapeutic approaches that target and regulate molecules associated with lipid regulation, inflammation, and apoptosis are also reviewed. The article concludes with a discussion on the current challenges and future development of nanomedicine for atherosclerotic diagnosis and treatment.

Liposomes: structure, composition, types, and clinical applications

Hamdi Nsairat et al.

Summary: Liposomes are widely used nanocarriers for drug delivery due to their high biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low immunogenicity. They enhance drug solubility and controlled release, as well as allowing for surface modifications for targeted and sustained release. Liposomes have been clinically approved for treating various diseases and show promising potential in clinical trials.

Diagnostic Applications of Ultrasmall Superparamagnetic Particles of Iron Oxide for Imaging Myocardial and Vascular Inflammation

Ioannis Merinopoulos et al.

Summary: Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) plays a crucial role in evaluating myocardial anatomy, function, and tissue characteristics, especially as inflammation is increasingly recognized as a key factor in various myocardial diseases. The use of ultrasmall superparamagnetic particles of iron oxide (USPIO) in CMR enhances imaging of myocardial and vascular inflammation, offering valuable information on the cellular inflammatory component.

Summary: Atherosclerosis is a chronic disease associated with a spectrum of cardiovascular diseases, prevalent in both high-income countries and low- to middle-income regions worldwide. The vascular endothelium plays a crucial role in atherogenesis by influencing plaque formation and intercellular communication. Future directions in preclinical atherosclerosis research include epigenetic and targeted therapies to halt disease progression in at-risk or affected individuals.
