Naturally Occurring Antioxidant Therapy in Alzheimer's Disease

Andrila E. Collins et al.

Summary: The prevalence of Alzheimer's disease is estimated to double by 2040. Current treatments do not address the underlying causes of the disease, but research suggests that antioxidants may help mitigate oxidative stress. Recent studies have focused on natural antioxidants as potential preventatives and treatments for neurodegenerative conditions associated with oxidative stress.

Geographic Variability of Biologically Active Compounds, Antioxidant Activity and Physico-Chemical Properties in Wild Bilberries (Vaccinium myrtillus L.)

Dalia Urbonaviciene et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to characterize the variation in biologically active compounds, antioxidant activity and physico-chemical properties in bilberries from different sites in Northern Europe. The study found variations in the biologically active compounds and antioxidant activity of bilberries, suggesting the influence of genotype.

Impact of short-term bilberry supplementation on glycemic control, cardiovascular disease risk factors, and antioxidant status in Chinese patients with type 2 diabetes

Sze Wa Chan et al.

Summary: Short-term bilberry supplementation in patients with type 2 diabetes did not have significant effects on glycemic control, lipid profile, antioxidant status, or inflammatory status. However, the trend towards improved glycemic control may suggest that longer treatment periods could be effective in diabetic patients.

Antioxidant Effect of Wheat Germ Extracts and Their Antilipidemic Effect in Palmitic Acid-Induced Steatosis in HepG2 and 3T3-L1 Cells

Humna Liaqat et al.

Summary: The study compared the antioxidant and antilipidemic effects of different wheat germ extracts, demonstrating significant antioxidant potential and inhibition of cellular lipid accumulation. The findings suggest that wheat germ extracts have promising antioxidant potential and can attenuate plasma lipid and oxidation levels.

The Effects of Vitamin D Supplementation on Metabolic and Oxidative Stress Markers in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes: A 6-Month Follow Up Randomized Controlled Study

Milena Cojic et al.

Summary: The study suggests that daily oral doses of vitamin D can improve HbA1c levels over a period of 3 and 6 months, with a significant decrease in advanced oxidation protein products levels after 3 months of higher vitamin D doses. However, the impact of vitamin D on the HOMA-IR index, malondialdehyde levels, and TG/TBARS index was not statistically significant. Further research should focus on determining the appropriate doses of vitamin D in patients with type 2 diabetes to mitigate oxidative stress risk, metabolic syndrome risk, and related cardiovascular events.

Vitamin C supplementation improves blood pressure and oxidative stress after acute exercise in patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus: A randomized, placebo-controlled, cross-over study

Chongchira Boonthongkaew et al.

Summary: The study showed that 6-week Vitamin C supplementation could reduce pre-exercise and post-exercise blood pressure, possibly through improved oxidative stress and NO release. However, exercise did not have any effect on the outcome measures.
