Foam fractionation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in landfill leachate using different cosurfactants

Phong H. N. Vo et al.

Summary: Foam fractionation is an effective method to recover PFASs from aqueous sources, using the sorption of PFASs to the air-water interface of bubbles. The choice of cosurfactant plays a critical role in the effectiveness of foam fractionation. This study evaluates the effectiveness of four cosurfactants with different-charged headgroups and estimates the air-water interfacial partitioning of PFASs in the presence of these cosurfactants.

Occurrence, distribution, and input pathways of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances in soils near different sources in Shanghai

Summary: This study investigated the concentrations and compositions of PFAS in soils near different potential sources in Shanghai. The results showed that the concentrations of PFAS varied among different locations, with the highest concentrations near the fire station. PFAS in soils were mainly composed of short-chain perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids. Principal component analysis indicated different correlations between long-chain and short-chain PFAS. Strong positive correlations were found within three groups of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids. PFAS near the fire station were likely directly emitted from a point source, while PFAS near other sites had multiple input pathways.

Boron-doped diamond electrodes degrade short- and long-chain per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances in real industrial wastewaters

Alec B. Nienhauser et al.

Summary: The electrochemical oxidation with boron-doped diamond electrode was studied for the removal of six legacy perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in semiconductor fabrication wastewaters. The degradation kinetics decreased with decreasing carbon length in single-solute systems. The presence of PFAS in the solution affected the potential affinity for PFAS on the electrode surface. The wettabiltiy of the electrode surface increased with longer chain length and decreased with increasing PFAS concentration. PFASs with a sulfonated head group degraded faster than their carboxylic counterparts. The presence of surfactants in the wastewater reduced the degradation efficiency. However, multi-solute solutions had higher degradation rates compared to single-solute PFAS systems. Real wastewater containing PFASs could be efficiently treated using electrochemical oxidation.

PFAS Exposure Pathways for Humans and Wildlife: A Synthesis of Current Knowledge and Key Gaps in Understanding

Amila O. De Silva et al.

Summary: The understanding of human and wildlife exposures to PFAS has mainly focused on a few traditional substances, but there is a need for assessment of a wider range of new PFAS. Diet is a major pathway of human exposure to some PFAS, but there is significant variability across populations and compounds. Total fluorine data and information on unidentified organofluorine are essential, and water has been identified as a major exposure source in contaminated communities.
