Revisiting Airflow and Aerosol Transport Phenomena in the Deep Lungs with Microfluidics

Josue Sznitman

Summary: This review discusses the current understanding of airflow and aerosol transport in the deep lungs, focusing on the advancements brought by experimental and numerical simulation efforts. Microfluidic-based platforms in the past decade have provided opportunities for in vitro solutions that accurately capture respiratory airflow and aerosol transport mechanisms at true scale.

Combustion-derived particles from biomass sources differently promote epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition on A549 cells

Sara Marchetti et al.

Summary: Exposure to combustion-derived particles from biomass sources can potentially induce pro-carcinogenic effects on epithelial cells, with a focus on EMT and invasion processes. This study found that biomass combustion particles differentially modulated cell viability, migration, invasion, and markers linked to EMT. A higher content of organic compounds in the particles may play a crucial role in these effects.

A look beyond the priority: A systematic review of the genotoxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic endpoints of non-priority PAHs*

Francisco Carlos da Silva Junior et al.

Summary: The systematic review found evidence of genotoxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic endpoints in 13 US EPA non-priority PAHs. Some of the PAHs, such as 5-MC, 7,12-DMBA, CPP, and Db [al]P, have been extensively studied and shown to have mutagenic effects and potential carcinogenicity. More research is needed to improve future protocols for environmental analysis and risk assessment in populations with high exposure to these PAHs.

In vitro and in vitro toxicity study of diesel exhaust particles using BEAS-2B cell line and the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans as biological models

Chenzhi Yan et al.

Summary: It is widely acknowledged that diesel exhaust particles (DEPs) are closely associated with organ system dysfunction. This study evaluated the potential toxicity of DEP using in vitro human BEAS-2B cell line and in vivo animal model Caenorhabditis elegans, showing that DEP exposure can impair cell and organism stability. The study also found that DEP exposure led to membrane integrity damage, decreased cell viability, and increased levels of reactive oxygen species, damaged DNA fragments, and apoptosis in cell lines.

Introductory lecture: air quality in megacities

Luisa T. Molina

Summary: Urbanization leads to the growth of megacities, where intense activities contribute to high levels of air pollutants that affect human health and climate. While progress has been made in understanding and reducing air pollution, more research and international collaboration are needed to address the complex processes and challenges in improving air quality in megacities.
