Advancing human gut microbiota research by considering gut transit time

Nicola Prochazkova et al.

Summary: Accumulating evidence indicates that gut transit time is a key factor in shaping the gut microbiota composition and activity, which are linked to human health. This review discusses the variations in whole gut and segmental transit times, the impact of these variations on the gut microbiota, and the mechanisms by which the gut microbiota may affect gut motility. It argues that considering individual differences in gut transit time can improve our understanding of diet-microbiota interactions and disease-related microbiome signatures.

Stool energy density is positively correlated to intestinal transit time and related to microbial enterotypes

Jos Boekhorst et al.

Summary: This study investigates the association between energy extraction from the diet and intestinal transit time and microbial community structure in overweight adults. Contrary to expectations, individuals with longer intestinal transit time extracted more energy from their diet. Different enterotypes were also associated with variations in energy extraction, with individuals in the Ruminococcaceae enterotype having higher energy extraction than those in the Bacteroides enterotype.

Analysis of Gut Microbiome and Metabolite Characteristics in Patients with Slow Transit Constipation

Hongliang Tian et al.

Summary: The study found significant differences in gut microbiome diversity between the STC and control groups, with greater diversity in the STC group and differences in species composition at different classification levels. Acetate concentrations were significantly reduced in the STC group compared to the control group, while other SCFAs showed no significant difference. These differences may serve as valuable biomarkers for STC.

Summary: In healthy adults, the gut microbiome, measures of colonic fermentation, and abiotic factors were not significantly associated with variability in postprandial responses, suggesting that contributions of these factors to PPGRs may be subtle.

Health benefits of whole grain: effects on dietary carbohydrate quality, the gut microbiome, and consequences of processing

Chris J. Seal et al.

Summary: The ratio and complexity of digestible and indigestible components in carbohydrates determine their nutritional quality, with whole grains being more beneficial for health. The processing of grains offers opportunities to improve the nutritional quality and positively impact gut microbiota and health.

Microbial Regulation of Host Physiology by Short-chain Fatty Acids

Bart van der Hee et al.

Summary: The ancestral diet had more fiber, while modern society's diet lacks it. SCFAs produced by gut bacteria fermenting fiber play a crucial role in intestinal homeostasis and the pathophysiology of human diseases. SCFAs can also impact tissues and organs beyond the gut through blood circulation, inducing epigenetic changes in the genome.

Dietary Fibre Intake Is Associated with Serum Levels of Uraemic Toxins in Children with Chronic Kidney Disease

Amina El Amouri et al.

Summary: Increased dietary fiber intake in pediatric CKD patients is inversely related to the serum concentrations of certain PBUTs, suggesting potential benefits of dietary fiber for this population. These findings should inform dietary recommendations for children with CKD.
