Prospective associations between vitamin D and depression in middle-aged adults: findings from the UK Biobank cohort

Amy Ronaldson et al.

Summary: This study suggests that both vitamin D deficiency and insufficiency may be risk factors for the development of new-onset depression in middle-aged adults. Moreover, vitamin D deficiency (and to a lesser extent insufficiency) may predict sustained depressive symptoms in those who are already depressed. These findings have significant implications for public health.

Summary: This meta-analysis evaluates the impact of high flow nasal oxygenation (HFNO) on the risk of hypoxemia during gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures (GEPs) under sedation. The results indicate that HFNO significantly reduces the risk of hypoxemia, severe hypoxemia, other airway interventions, and procedural interruption.

Vitamin D and Cancer: An Historical Overview of the Epidemiology and Mechanisms

Alberto Munoz et al.

Summary: This paper provides a narrative review of the evidence supporting the anticancer actions of vitamin D. It discusses the findings from ecological studies, observational studies, and case-control studies, as well as the limited success of meta-analyses of cancer incidence with respect to dietary intake. The review also highlights the effects of vitamin D compounds on tumor cell proliferation, dedifferentiation, invasion, and metastasis inhibition. Overall, the available mechanistic data support the global protective action of vitamin D against several important types of cancer.

Summary: This meta-analysis found that the use of laryngeal mask airway (LMA) after thyroidectomy may reduce the risk of postoperative pharyngolaryngeal complications compared to the use of endotracheal tube (ETT). LMA was associated with a lower risk of postoperative sore throat, hoarseness, and emergence cough. However, there was no difference between the two groups in the severity of dysphagia.

Is Vitamin D Important in Anxiety or Depression? What Is the Truth?

Serife Akpinar et al.

Summary: Low levels of vitamin D are associated with increased symptoms of depression and anxiety. Therefore, vitamin D screening should be performed in the prevention and treatment planning of these mood disorders. Vitamin D, with antioxidant properties and activity in brain tissue, is important for preventing or treating mood disorders, but serum levels must be monitored.

Summary: Hypovitaminosis D is a serious public health problem, and maintaining normal serum vitamin D levels can improve cardiovascular health and reduce stroke risk. Vitamin D also influences brain development, immune modulation, and brain neuroplasticity. Further research is needed to explore the effects of vitamin D supplementation on stroke survivors' rehabilitation outcomes and prevention.

Summary: The main source of vitamin D in humans is the skin's biosynthesis through sun exposure, with additional intake from foods like fatty fish. Deficiency can lead to global health issues due to inadequate sunlight exposure. Beyond maintaining calcium and phosphorus balance, vitamin D plays key roles in the immune and cardiovascular systems.

Pharmacological management of post-stroke depression: an update of the evidence and clinical guidance

Janne Kaergaard Mortensen et al.

Summary: Post-stroke depression (PSD) is common, serious, and has a considerable risk of becoming chronic. Pharmacological treatment, particularly with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), is recommended as first choice, but may not always be tolerated or effective. Close follow-up, dose adjustments, and add-on possibilities are important aspects of treatment. Antidepressant treatment can prevent PSD, but its effect on enhancing stroke recovery is less clear.
