Short-term exposure to fine particulate matter and its constituents may affect renal function via oxidative stress: A longitudinal panel study

Shouxin Peng et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the association of PM2.5 and its constituents with kidney function and found significant associations between elevated blood urea nitrogen levels and PM2.5 as well as several metals and PAHs components. Superoxide dismutase was found to be positively associated with PM2.5 and mediated a portion of the association.

Evidence-Based Medical Therapy in Patients With Heart Failure With Reduced Ejection Fraction and Chronic Kidney Disease

Iris E. Beldhuis et al.

Summary: Chronic kidney disease is a common comorbidity in patients with heart failure and is associated with increased severity and poor cardiovascular outcomes. Limited information is available on the efficacy and safety of heart failure therapies in patients with severe CKD, particularly in stage 5 CKD. However, some drug classes have shown evidence of safety and efficacy in patients with stage 4 CKD. Additionally, the decline in eGFR observed with the initiation of certain heart failure drug classes does not necessarily indicate a worsening condition and should not lead to discontinuation of life-saving therapies.

Enhancing selenium and key flavor compounds contents in soy sauce using selenium-enriched soybean

Xianli Gao et al.

Summary: Selenium-enriched soybean used to make selenium-enriched soy sauce significantly increased the selenium content, organic selenium content, small peptides and free amino acids content in the soy sauce, as well as enhanced the aroma-active compounds. The selenium-enriched soybean also promoted the reproduction of aroma-producing bacteria and yeast, leading to more aroma compounds in the soy sauce.

Cardiorenal Nexus: A Review With Focus on Combined Chronic Heart and Kidney Failure, and Insights From Recent Clinical Trials

Peter A. McCullough et al.

Summary: The cardiorenal nexus is a bidirectional relationship between the heart and the kidneys. Abnormalities in cardiac function can lead to kidney disease, and kidney disease can lead to worsening cardiac function and increased risk of cardiovascular disease. This relationship is important because the prevalence of chronic kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, and associated morbidities is expected to increase with an aging population. Observational studies provide evidence for this relationship, and a multidisciplinary approach is necessary for the management of these diseases.

The role of selenium in type-2 diabetes mellitus and its metabolic comorbidities

Holger Steinbrenner et al.

Summary: This review discusses the role of selenium in T2DM and its metabolic co-morbidities, emphasizing the relevance of inflammation and oxidative stress. It describes the epidemiology of selenium studies in diabetes and explains the interaction between selenium status and glucose control. According to current research, dietary selenium supplementation does not appear to be a major causal factor for the development of T2DM.

Association between Selenium Status and Chronic Kidney Disease in Middle-Aged and Older Chinese Based on CHNS Data

Changxiao Xie et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to investigate the association between CKD prevalence and selenium intake in middle-aged and older Chinese. The results showed that an adequate selenium intake may have a positive effect on CKD. The influence of individual weight and location on this effect needs further exploration.

Enhancing organic selenium content and antioxidant activities of soy sauce using nano-selenium during soybean soaking

Jingru Chen et al.

Summary: Nano-selenium, due to its higher safety, has a greater potential for preventing selenium-deficiency diseases compared to inorganic selenium. In this study, spherical nano-selenium particles were prepared and used to produce selenium-enriched soy sauces, which showed significantly increased total selenium and organic selenium contents. The soy sauce prepared with nano-selenium also exhibited enhanced antioxidant activities.

Advanced oxidation protein products contribute to chronic kidney disease-induced muscle atrophy by inducing oxidative stress via CD36/NADPH oxidase pathway

Hiromasa Kato et al.

Summary: This study found that haemodialysis patients with sarcopenia had higher serum AOPPs levels compared to those without sarcopenia, and these levels were negatively correlated with muscle strength. AOPPs contribute to CKD-induced sarcopenia and could be a potential therapeutic target for treatment. Serum AOPPs levels may serve as a new diagnostic marker for sarcopenia in CKD patients.
