Effect of Resistance Exercise Order on Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors in Older Women: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Crisieli M. M. Tomeleri et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of two specific resistance training exercise orders on cardiovascular risk factors. The results showed that regardless of whether multi-joint exercises were performed before single-joint exercises or vice versa, 12 weeks of resistance training had similar positive effects on body fat reduction and metabolic biomarker improvements in older women.

Effects of Different Resistance Training Loads on the Muscle Quality Index in Older Women

Alex S. Ribeiro et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of resistance training with low and moderate loads on muscular strength, muscle mass, and muscle quality index (MQI) in older women. The results showed that both low and moderate loads were equally effective in promoting improvements in muscular strength, muscle growth, and MQI in older women.

Effects of resistance training performed to repetition failure or non-failure on muscular strength and hypertrophy: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Jozo Grgic et al.

Summary: Training to muscle failure or non-failure does not have a significant impact on muscular strength and hypertrophy, except in studies where training volume is not equated between the groups, favoring non-failure training for strength gains. In resistance-trained individuals, training to failure has a significant effect on muscle hypertrophy.

Definition and Diagnostic Criteria for Sarcopenic Obesity: ESPEN and EASO Consensus Statement

Lorenzo M. Donini et al.

Summary: Loss of skeletal muscle mass and function is common in individuals with obesity. The co-existence of excess adiposity and low muscle mass/function, known as sarcopenic obesity (SO), negatively impacts patient outcomes. However, the lack of a universally established definition and diagnostic criteria for SO hampers prevention and treatment efforts.

Resistance training effectiveness on body composition and body weight outcomes in individuals with overweight and obesity across the lifespan: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: Resistance-based exercise programs are effective in reducing body fat percentage and whole-body fat mass, as well as increasing lean mass in individuals with overweight/obesity. Both combined resistance and aerobic exercise and resistance training alone show significant results compared to no training controls. These effects are consistent across different age and sex groups.

Simon Lovegrove et al.

Summary: This study investigated the reliability of repetitions in reserve (RIR) as a method for prescribing resistance training load for novice athletes. The results showed that RIR is a reliable tool for load prescription in a young novice population, and different repetition schemes can be used to target specific resistance training adaptations.

Therapeutic strategies for sarcopenic obesity: a systematic review

Eleonora Poggiogalle et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that exercise-based interventions are effective in improving lean mass and reducing total adiposity in individuals with sarcopenic obesity. Resistance training has been found to be a common approach with beneficial effects on body composition, while novel strategies such as electrical acupuncture and whole-body electromyostimulation with nutritional supplementation have also shown promise. However, the overall significance of these interventions is limited by a lack of uniformity in the definition of sarcopenic obesity and conflicting results from nutritional supplement studies. Further research is needed to identify optimal treatment options for sarcopenic obesity in different age groups beyond just the elderly population.

The influence of sex, training intensity, and frequency on muscular adaptations to 40 weeks of resistance exercise in older adults

Ryan M. Miller et al.

Summary: This investigation aimed to identify the impact of sex, training intensity, and frequency on long-term resistance exercise outcomes in older adults. The results showed that older men and women displayed similar long-term resistance exercise outcomes. Regardless of the frequency or intensity, the current prescriptions effectively increased strength, with high-intensity 2 days/week, low-intensity 3 days/week, and low-intensity 2 days/week training appearing to result in greater lower body strength.
