Array Point Discharge as Enhanced Tandem Excitation Source for Miniaturized Optical Emission Spectrometer

Meng Zhang et al.

Summary: A new compact tandem excitation source was designed and constructed using an array point discharge microplasma for a miniaturized optical emission spectrometer. The ArrPD microplasma was constructed by arranging three pairs of point discharges in sequence in a narrow discharge chamber, improving excitation capability through serial excitation. The enlarged discharge plasma region allowed for increased interception of gaseous analytes, leading to improved excitation efficiency and OES signal.

Characterization and Quantification of Arsenic Species in Foodstuffs of Plant Origin by HPLC/ICP-MS

Teresa D'Amore et al.

Summary: Arsenic is a well-known carcinogenic and toxic element that is present in the environment in both inorganic and organic forms. The identification and determination of arsenic species are important due to the varying toxicity of these compounds. A sensitive and optimized method using HPLC/ICP-MS was developed for the determination of inorganic arsenic and relevant organic arsenic compounds. The method was validated and successfully applied to various food matrices, revealing significant concentrations of arsenic in seaweed, rice, cereals, legumes, and plant-based foods for infants and young children. These findings contribute to the assessment of overall arsenic exposure and the establishment of maximum limits.

Fast and Sensitive Determination of Cadmium and Selenium in Rice by Direct Sampling Electrothermal Vaporization Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry

Guanyu Lan et al.

Summary: In this study, a direct solid sampling device based on modified graphite furnace electrothermal vaporization (GF-ETV) with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was established for the simultaneous detection of trace selenium and cadmium in rice samples. The method showed low limits of detection and good repeatability. Compared with the microwave digestion ICP-MS method, this method also demonstrated good accuracy and precision for the detection of selenium and cadmium in rice samples. It is a fast analysis technique that does not require sample digestion.

Portable and miniature mercury analyzer using direct sampling inbuilt-metal ceramic electrothermal vaporization

Zhaohui Lv et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel direct sampling mercury analyzer coupled with a miniature atomic absorption spectrometer was fabricated for sensitive determination of mercury in soil by utilizing a small-size inbuilt-metal ceramic heater as a solid sampling electrothermal vaporizer. The results showed that the proposed method had favorable analytical accuracy and precision, and the fabricated instrumentation was small and had low power consumption, making it suitable for portable and rapid detection of mercury in soil.

Summary: This study investigated the transfer pathway of arsenic in rice and vegetables and measured the associated health risks. The results showed that the levels of arsenic in rice and vegetables exceeded the acceptable limit and were significantly correlated with the levels in scalp hairs. The bioconcentration factor for rice and vegetables was less than one, and the average daily intake exceeded the recommended limit. According to the maximum incremental lifetime cancer risk estimation, a considerable proportion of the population was at a high risk. Additionally, the study found that vegetables contributed more to the body loading of arsenic compared to rice.

Novel nickel trap coupled with electrothermal vaporization for the direct solid-sampling analysis of cadmium in soil

Tengpeng Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a foamed nickel trap was used as a gas-phase enrichment material to preconcentrate and release Cd. The developed method showed high sensitivity and precision for the direct detection of Cd in soil samples. It eliminated the need for acid digestion and has potential for miniaturization and portability in the future.

Modeling analysis of the characteristics of selenium-rich soil in heavy metal high background area and its impact on main crops

Taoyuan Xie et al.

Summary: The study focused on the impact of selenium-rich soil in heavy metal high background areas on main crops, established the classification standards for soil selenium content, and analyzed the measurement results of selenium content in the soil using statistical methods. The research results indicated that different heavy metal pollution conditions lead to diverse growth of corn, rice, and soybeans, with corn showing the highest selenium enrichment rate followed by rice and soybeans.
