Groundwater Circulation and Origin of Salinity in a Multi-aquifer System: The Gohar-Zamin Mining Area, Iran

Mohammad Javad Gharaat et al.

Summary: Determining the origin and salinity of groundwater in active and unstable mining environments is challenging. This study used major/minor ions, stable isotopes, and radioisotopes to evaluate the origin and salinity of groundwater. The results showed that the salinity mainly comes from halite dissolution and that reverse cation exchange affects the groundwater in certain aquifers. The stable isotope and radioisotope data also confirmed the different ages and origins of the groundwater in the aquifers.

SWAT-S: A SWAT-salinity module for watershed-scale modeling of natural salinity

Mohammad Sadegh Maleki Tirabadi et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method to model natural salinity processes in watershed systems using new salinity equations in SWAT, which can utilize low-quality maps for salinity modeling. This methodology can be used to assess the impacts of management practices, climate change, and land-use changes on non-point source pollution at a watershed scale.

Patterns in river channel sinuosity of the Meuse, Roer and Rhine rivers in the Lower Rhine Embayment rift-system, are they tectonically forced?

H. A. G. Woolderink et al.

Summary: The tectonic and fluvial setting of the Rhine-Meuse river system in the Lower Rhine Embayment rift system is well known. The patterns of sinuosity changes in the Meuse River are related to fault-induced changes of subsurface lithology, while in the Roer River they are related to normal longitudinal gradient changes. The sinuosity of the Rhine River is mainly determined by lithological differences and incision rates.

Geology and hydrochemistry of brine springs in the Zagros Fold and Thrust Belt (ZFTB), Iran: A review on origin, environmental aspects, and economic potentials

Mohsen Rezaei et al.

Summary: This study conducted a regional-scale reconnaissance of 11 brine springs in the ZFTB, revealing their hypersaline nature and potential economic lithium recovery. Some of the springs already have lithium concentrations reaching economic extraction levels, and there is concern about the adverse environmental effects on water resources ecosystem.
