Global distribution of cryptic native, introduced and hybrid lineages in the widespread estuarine amphipod Ampithoe valida

Summary: Biological invasions pose a severe threat to coastal ecosystems, however, the presence of cryptic diversity and inaccurate species identification makes tracking difficult. This study used genetic sequencing and genotyping to clarify the cryptic diversity and introduction history of the marine amphipod Ampithoe valida. The results revealed that the species complex consists of three cryptic lineages and likely originated in the North Pacific before dispersing to the North Atlantic through a trans-arctic exchange.

Summary: This article reviews our current knowledge of Diopatra ecology, including its natural history, ecosystem engineering effects, and trophic relationships. It also explores how human activities such as climate change, bait fishing, and species invasions are influencing Diopatra. Most of the existing knowledge on Diopatra ecology comes from focal studies of a few species in well-known regions, and further research is needed to evaluate how this understanding applies to other species and regions, in order to deepen our understanding of marine systems'structure and function.

The results suggest that the biogeographic distribution of D. biscayensis is likely the result of introductions rather than historic range contractions, with unexpected genetic substructure found in certain locations.
