Eco-toxicity of nano-plastics and its implication on human metabolism: Current and future perspective

Shoumi Haldar et al.

Summary: This review paper discusses the source, bio-accumulation, potential toxicity impact, and management strategies of nanoplastics pollution. It shows that nanoplastics interfere with metabolic pathways, causing organ dysfunction and altering organism physiology and behavior. The major exposure route for nanoplastics is ingestion, although inhalation is also possible. However, there is limited research on the risk assessment of nanoplastics toxicity for human health, highlighting the importance of studying their potential impacts and environmental accumulation.

Impact of Microplastics and Nanoplastics on Livestock Health: An Emerging Risk for Reproductive Efficiency

Susy Urli et al.

Summary: Pollution from microplastics and nanoplastics poses a significant environmental issue, threatening human and animal health. While research on the effects of plastic pollution on aquatic species is abundant, there are few studies focusing on the pathophysiological consequences of microplastic exposure on mammalian reproductive systems. Existing studies have shown that plastic particles can cause oxidative stress, apoptosis, inflammatory responses, endocrine disruption, and organ accumulation. Additionally, microplastics have been found to impact microbial communities and contribute to the exchange of antibiotic and metal resistance genes. Attention should be given to livestock as they produce food with the potential for biological amplification of plastic pollution. Accumulation of microplastics and nanoplastics in human and animal tissues has been observed with negative effects, but the long-term consequences are not yet fully understood. This review provides an overview of the adverse effects of micro- and nanoplastic exposure on livestock and assesses the potential risks to reproductive functions.

Release of microplastic fibres and fragmentation to billions of nanoplastics from period products: preliminary assessment of potential health implications

Leonardo Pantoja Munoz et al.

Summary: The study found that disposable period products contain synthetic polymers that could be in direct contact with the vaginal wall, releasing fibers and up to 17 billion nanoplastics per tampon. The health implications of these microfibers and nanoplastics are unknown, but could potentially pose public health concerns from the nanoplastics themselves, adsorbed contaminants, and leaching additives associated with plastic production upon disposal.

Discovery and quantification of plastic particle pollution in human blood

Heather A. Leslie et al.

Summary: Plastic particles are widespread pollutants in the environment and food chain, and this study successfully developed a method to measure the presence of plastic particles in human blood. The study found four high production volume polymers in blood samples and demonstrated that plastic particles can be taken up by the human bloodstream.

The emerging risk of microplastics and nanoplastics on the microstructure and function of reproductive organs in mammals: A systematic review of preclinical evidence

Rodolfo C. Marcelino et al.

Summary: Plastic particle pollution can harm the reproductive system of mammals, leading to reduced fertility and reproductive organ diseases. This damage is caused by accumulation of plastic particles in the gonads, triggering oxidative and inflammatory reactions.

Motility Assessment of Ram Spermatozoa

Madeleine Van de Hoek et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the mechanical and energetic processes involved in mammalian sperm motility and the impact of various factors on the motility of ram sperm. It also explores the current methods used in the sheep livestock production industry for assessing ram semen quality and predicting artificial insemination success. These methods include mass motility assessment, subjective motility evaluation, computer-assisted sperm analysis, as well as newly developed methods such as flagellar tracing and molecular assays. The understanding and assessment of sperm motility are crucial for optimizing ram semen processing and quality control in ovine artificial breeding programs.

Interactions of Ingested Polystyrene Microplastics with Heavy Metals (Cadmium or Silver) as Environmental Pollutants: A Comprehensive In Vivo Study Using Drosophila melanogaster

Fatma Turna Demir et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interactions between ingested microplastics and heavy metals in Drosophila. The results demonstrated that combined exposure to smaller sized plastic particles and heavy metals (cadmium and silver) induced aggravated genotoxic effects, including intestinal damage, genetic damage, and intracellular oxidative stress.

Evaluating the Presence of Marine Litter in Cetaceans Stranded in the Balearic Islands (Western Mediterranean Sea)

Antonia Solomando et al.

Summary: This study provides the first evidence of the impact of plastic debris on stranded cetaceans in the Balearic Islands, specifically in terms of ingestion and entanglement. The findings reveal that 10% of the examined cetaceans had ingested plastic items, and three individuals had plastic debris in their stomachs. Additionally, seven cases of entanglement were recorded, affecting four different species. The study highlights the need for further research on stranded cetaceans to better understand the effects of plastic pollution.

Reproductive toxicity of polystyrene microplastics: In vivo experimental study on testicular toxicity in mice

Baolian Hou et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of microplastics on spermatogenesis in mice, showing a significant reduction in sperm count and an increase in deformity rate. Exposure to microplastics caused atrophy, shedding, and apoptosis of sperm cells in the testis, and disrupted the balance of Nrf2/HO-1/NF-κB pathway, leading to abnormal sperm quality in ICR mice.

Polystyrene microplastics induced male reproductive toxicity in mice

Haibo Jin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the toxic effects of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) on male reproductive systems in mice. The results showed that PS-MPs accumulated in the testis, entered testicular cells, and led to decreased sperm quality and testosterone levels. Additionally, PS-MPs induced testicular inflammation and disruption of the blood-testis barrier, demonstrating the potential reproductive dysfunctions caused by microplastics.

In vivo impact assessment of orally administered polystyrene nanoplastics: biodistribution, toxicity, and inflammatory response in mice

Yun Ju Choi et al.

Summary: The study found that oral administration of nanoplastics (NP) for 2 weeks resulted in high accumulation in the liver, kidneys, and intestine of ICR mice, inducing severe inflammatory and oxidative stress responses. Both NP and coagulation-based purified NP had an impact on the biodistribution, toxicity, and inflammatory response in mice.

Neurotoxicity in Marine Invertebrates: An Update

Irene Deidda et al.

Summary: This review highlights the increase in pollution in air, soil, and sea in recent decades, and discusses the neurotoxic effects of common marine pollutants on marine organisms. Marine invertebrates play a crucial role in ecosystems and are valuable bioindicators for assessing detrimental chemical agents related to the marine environment. Further research on the neurotoxic effects of pollutants in marine invertebrates could offer alternatives to expensive and ethically questionable mammalian models.
