Predicting occurrence of liquefaction-induced lateral spreading using gradient boosting algorithms integrated with particle swarm optimization: PSO-XGBoost, PSO-LightGBM, and PSO-CatBoost

Selcuk Demir et al.

Summary: It is possible to predict the occurrence of liquefaction-induced lateral spreading through machine learning algorithms. This study investigated the performance of gradient boosting algorithms, including eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), Categorical Boosting (CatBoost), and Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM), in predicting lateral spreading occurrence. The findings demonstrated that all three algorithms performed well, with PSO-CatBoost outperforming other models in terms of performance metrics.

Extreme precipitation indices over India using CMIP6: a special emphasis on the SSP585 scenario

Nagireddy Masthan Reddy et al.

Summary: This study compared 17 Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) datasets with Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) data to investigate extreme precipitation indices. The results showed that most datasets performed well for the consecutive wet days (CWD), heavy precipitation > 10 mm (R10MM), very heavy precipitation > 20 mm (R20MM), and precipitation > 2.5 mm (RR2.5) indices. The top 5 performing models, EC-Earth3, EC-Earth3-Veg, MRI-ESM2-0, GFDL-ESM4, and MIROC6, were ensembled projected for future periods under different scenarios. The future extreme precipitation indices can be used by flood modelers and hydrologists for watershed management.

DEM resolution effects on machine learning performance for flood probability mapping

Mohammadtaghi Avand et al.

Summary: Assessing the impact of the spatial resolution of Digital Elevation Models on flood probability prediction accuracy, it was found that resolving the DEM alone does not significantly affect the accuracy, while factors like altitude, precipitation, and distance from the river have a considerable impact on floods in the region. The Random Forest model is more accurate in preparing Flood Probability Maps than Artificial Neural Network and Generalized Linear Model.

Effectiveness of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 for flood detection assessment in Europe

Angelica Tarpanelli et al.

Summary: Inundation is a major natural hazard in Europe, but flood hazard and risk evaluation is complicated due to poor or unevenly distributed monitoring systems. The ESA Earth Observation Program's satellites, including Sentinels, have the potential to bridge this gap, but current mapping of flooded areas using Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 is often incomplete. This study evaluates the effectiveness of these satellites in systematically assessing floods in Europe, and finds that while Sentinel-1 can potentially observe 58% of flood events, Sentinel-2 is limited by cloud coverage and can only observe 28% of events.
