Correlation between aortic valve protein levels and vector flow mapping of wall shear stress and oscillatory shear index in patients supported with continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices

Serge Kobsa et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) on aortic regurgitation. By analyzing Doppler images and tissue samples from heart transplant patients, it was found that nonphysiological wall shear stress and oscillatory shear index can alter the abundance of structural proteins in the heart tissue.

Ascending aortic aneurysm haemodynamics are associated with aortic wall biomechanical properties

Davis McClarty et al.

Summary: The hemodynamics in ascending thoracic aortic aneurysms (ATAAs) have an effect on arterial wall properties and are associated with the risk of aortic dissection. Hemodynamic indices may provide insights into aortic wall integrity and lead to novel metrics for assessing risks associated with ATAAs.

Assessment of Paravalvular Leak Severity and Thrombogenic Potential in Transcatheter Bicuspid Aortic Valve Replacements Using Patient-Specific Computational Modeling

Salwa B. Anam et al.

Summary: This study utilized patient-specific computational modeling to assess post-TAVR complications in BAV patients, finding a significant decrease in post-implantation paravalvular leak and thrombogenic potential with the latest generation TAVR devices. This highlights the potential of simulations in pre-procedural planning for better clinical outcomes and device selection.

Patient-specific computer simulation to predict long-term outcomes after transcatheter aortic valve replacement

Cameron Dowling et al.

Summary: A study found that patient-specific computer simulation can identify patients at risk for long-term adverse outcomes after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). In this study, patients predicted to have significant paravalvular regurgitation (PVR) through computer simulation had a higher rate of death within 2 years.

Computational analysis of aortic haemodynamics in the presence of ascending aortic aneurysm

Aleksandra Petuchova et al.

Summary: This study investigates the hemodynamic parameters of an ascending aorta and ascending aortic aneurysm in humans using numerical modeling. The results show that the blood flow velocity is lower and the wall displacement is greater in the aorta with the aneurysm compared to the healthy aorta. The oscillatory shear index also decreases in the aneurysm-based model.

Detection and analysis of cerebral aneurysms based on X-ray rotational angiography - the CADA 2020 challenge

Matthias Ivantsits et al.

Summary: The CADA challenge aimed to support the development and benchmarking of algorithms for detecting, analyzing, and assessing the risk of cerebral aneurysms in 3DRA images. Participants presented U-Net-based detection solutions with similar accuracy to experts and excellent delineation of these structures. The rupture risk estimation methods achieved good results. The best method pipeline showed comparable performance to the ground-truth delineation.

Hemodynamic Abnormalities in the Aorta of Turner Syndrome Girls

Lauren Johnston et al.

Summary: Girls and women with Turner syndrome (TS) have congenital abnormalities that increase their risk of cardiovascular disease, with obesity and hypertension as contributing factors. Computational fluid dynamics simulations showed differences in aortic blood flow characteristics between TS girls and healthy counterparts, suggesting potential early onset of atherosclerosis in TS patients. Factors such as age, obesity, and aortic morphology play a crucial role in assessing cardiovascular risk in TS children.

Hemodynamic Modeling of Biological Aortic Valve Replacement Using Preoperative Data Only

Florian Hellmeier et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates an approach to predict aortic hemodynamics after biological AVR, showing strong correlations for maximum velocities and pressure gradients between postoperative 4D flow MRI data and CFD results. However, novel parameters like SFD and NFD appear to be more sensitive but harder to estimate accurately. Further optimization and validation are needed.

Summary: This research uses an in vitro model to simulate vascular anastomosis in pulmonary arteries and aid in surgical planning to reduce vascular restenosis. By utilizing bioprinting technology to reconstruct intervascular connections within bifurcated pulmonary arteries, the study found that vascular geometry and flow hemodynamics significantly affect endothelial cell viability, proliferation, alignment, microcapillary formation, and metabolic profiles.
