Malignancy following heart transplantation: differences in incidence and prognosis between sexes - a multicenter cohort study

Carlos Minguito-Carazo et al.

Summary: Male heart transplant patients have a higher risk of developing malignancies, especially in skin cancers and non-skin solid cancers. Females have lower overall incidence and mortality rates, and better survival after cancer diagnosis.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Influence of renal insufficiency pre-heart transplantation on malignancy risk post-heart transplantation

Stefan Roest et al.

Summary: Recent reports have shown that patients with heart failure (HF) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) may have an increased risk of developing malignancies, particularly after heart transplantation (HT). However, the duration of HF pre-HT was not found to be directly associated with the risk of malignancy post-HT, while CKD pre-HT was identified as an independent risk factor for malignancies after HT.

A new classification of cardio-oncology syndromes

Rudolf A. de Boer et al.

Summary: The relationship between cancer and cardiovascular disease is multifaceted. A 5-tier classification system has been introduced to categorize cardio-oncology syndromes, representing various aspects of this relationship. These types include mechanisms of cancer causing cardiovascular dysfunction, cancer therapies resulting in CVD, pro-oncogenic environment created by cardiovascular dysfunction, CVD therapies promoting cancer, and genetic predisposition to both CVD and cancer.

Cardiovascular Risk Factors Are Associated With Future Cancer

Emily S. Lau et al.

Summary: This study found that traditional CVD risk factors, 10-year ASCVD risk score, and natriuretic peptide concentrations are associated with an increased risk of future cancer. Conversely, a heart-healthy lifestyle is associated with a lower risk of future cancer. These results suggest that the association between CVD and future cancer may be due to shared risk factors.
