Cardiac injection of USSC boosts remuscularization of the infarcted heart by shaping the T-cell response

Zhaoping Ding et al.

Summary: Regenerating the injured heart has been a challenging task in cardiovascular medicine. Cell therapy has potential for myocardial infarction treatment, but low cell retention has limited its success. This study demonstrated that injection of apoptosis-resistant unrestricted somatic stem cells (USSC) into infarcted rat hearts resulted in thickening of the ventricular wall and restoration of ejection fraction. USSC induced T-cell enrichment and enhanced expression of T-cell related cytokines, which played a crucial role in the regenerative response. Secretome analysis and lineage tracing studies suggested that USSC secretes paracrine factors and boosts the T-cell driven endogenous regenerative response.

Bearing My Heart: The Role of Extracellular Matrix on Cardiac Development, Homeostasis, and Injury Response

Ana Catarina Silva et al.

Summary: The extracellular matrix (ECM) plays a crucial role in heart development and disease, with fibrosis being a major manifestation of many cardiovascular diseases. Effective treatments for managing fibrosis and promoting ECM repair are currently lacking. Understanding ECM composition and function is important for developing more efficient therapies for heart conditions.

Consistent Long-Term Therapeutic Efficacy of Human Umbilical Cord Matrix-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells After Myocardial Infarction Despite Individual Differences and Transient Engraftment

Tiago L. Laundos et al.

Summary: Research indicates that mesenchymal stem cells derived from the umbilical cord show strong potential in treating myocardial infarction by improving cardiac function and limiting adverse cardiac remodeling. While some variability was found among donors, these cell products exhibited similar functionality and transcriptome characteristics in in vitro experiments.
