Experimental study of the damage behaviour of laminated CFRP composites subjected to impulse lightning current

Yafeng Li et al.

Summary: Compared with traditional metal alloy materials, carbon fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites have many advantages. This study investigates the damage behavior of CFRP laminates exposed to impulse lightning current. Non-destructive techniques show that increasing current amplitude intensifies damage to CFRP samples, while the presence of an insulating epoxy resin layer exacerbates lightning strike damage. The use of expanded copper foil protection mitigated the damage.
