Working Memory Is Complex and Dynamic, Like Your Thoughts

Timothy J. Buschman et al.

Summary: Working memory is the place where thoughts are stored and manipulated. The traditional view suggested that it relies on stable neural dynamics, where a neural representation is activated and maintained. However, recent discoveries have shown that working memory involves various mechanisms, including discontinuous bursts of neural activity. Memories are also dynamic, evolving based on task requirements. Cortical rhythms may play a role in controlling these dynamics, enabling top-down executive control over our thoughts.

Strong Gamma Frequency Oscillations in the Adolescent Prefrontal Cortex

Zhengyang Wang et al.

Summary: Working memory ability continues to mature into adulthood in humans and nonhuman primates. Adolescent development is characterized by increased frontal firing rate in the delay period, but less is known about the coordinated activity between neurons. This study found that there was higher power in the gamma frequency range in both the cue and delay period in adolescents compared to adults. These changes were observed in various recording sites and could not be explained by performance differences.

Prefrontal cortical plasticity during learning of cognitive tasks

Hua Tang et al.

Summary: Training in working memory tasks induces lasting changes in prefrontal cortical activity, including increased neuronal recruitment, changes in firing rate, alterations in correlation structure between neurons, and redistribution of power across LFP frequency bands. Additionally, activity changes induced by the learned task can also be observed in a control task.

Decoding distributed oscillatory signals driven by memory and perception in the prefrontal cortex

Hisashi Tanigawa et al.

Summary: Sensory perception and memory recall generate different conscious experiences. External and internal neural activities signifying the same perceptual content overlap in the sensory cortex but remain elusive in the prefrontal cortex. In this study, using high-density electrocorticography and multivariate pattern analysis, researchers found that oscillatory signals in different frequency bands in the PFC carry significant but distinct information for predicting memory recall and perceptual features. This suggests that the frequency-specific distribution of oscillatory neural signals in the PFC can differentiate between different types of cognition.

Shape and Rule Information Is Reflected in Different Local Field Potential Frequencies and Different Areas of the Primate Lateral Prefrontal Cortex

Kazuhiro Sakamoto et al.

Summary: The Lateral Prefrontal Cortex (LFPC) plays a crucial role in executive function by adaptively storing behavior-relevant information as working memory. This study analyzed how LFPs recorded from the monkey LFPC are modulated by key factors in a shape manipulation task. The results showed that the ventral side of the LFPC is strongly affected by the transformed shape in the sample period, while the dorsal side is influenced by the arm-manipulation assignment. These findings suggest that area- and frequency-selective LFP modulations are involved in dynamically recruiting different behavior-relevant information in the LFPC.

Article Plasticity after cognitive training reflected in prefrontal local field potentials

Balbir Singh et al.

Summary: Learning to perform cognitive tasks induces cortical plasticity, which is reflected in changes in local field potential (LFP) power. This includes a reduction in power in the 20-40 Hz range during stimulus presentations and delay periods, and is consistent across different task types.

Inferring entire spiking activity from local field potentials

Nur Ahmadi et al.

Summary: This study aims to infer entire spiking activity (ESA) from local field potentials (LFPs) recorded intracortically from the motor cortex, demonstrating that LFPs contain substantial information about spiking activity, particularly ESA. The inference performance of ESA was consistently and significantly higher than those of single-unit activity (SUA) and multiunit activity (MUA), with local motor potential (LMP) being the most predictive feature.
