Iron Homeostasis in Insects

Maureen J. Gorman

Summary: Iron is essential but potentially harmful to cells. Insects have homeostatic processes to control iron in the body. Studies have shown that insects and mammals have different mechanisms of iron homeostasis. This review summarizes current knowledge and compares insect and mammalian iron homeostasis mechanisms.

Two ferritins from Dermanyssus gallinae: characterization and in vivo assessment as protective antigens

Xiaolin Xu et al.

Summary: The iron-storage proteins play a crucial role in dealing with iron during blood digestion for the poultry red mite. Immunization with rDg-FER1 successfully induced chickens to produce high levels of antigen-specific IgY, leading to a significant increase in mite mortality and decreases in oviposition and fecundity. The overall immunization efficacy of rDg-FER1 was 93.51%, demonstrating its potential as a vaccine antigen for poultry red mites.

Cloning, expression, and function of ferritins in the tick Haemaphysalis flava

Yu Zhao et al.

Summary: The full-length cDNA of two ferritins of Haemaphysalis flava were cloned and their functions were analyzed. RNAi experiments showed that Hf-FER1 and Hf-FER2 play important roles in the fecundity of ticks, as silencing them resulted in decreased egg laying rates and abnormal egg morphology.

Independent somatic distribution of heme and iron in ticks

Jan Perner et al.

Summary: Ticks, as blood-feeding ectoparasites, have undergone genomic reductions that prevent them from synthesizing heme. Instead, they acquire heme and iron from their host and maintain systemic homeostasis through a secretory type of ferritin. These adaptations are crucial for their successful feeding and reproduction.

Summary: The metabolic capacity of Diplonema papillatum shows extensive potential for adjustment under different conditions, primarily occurring at the proteomic level. Gluconeogenesis is significantly favored over glycolysis in all conditions, while the TCA cycle represents a combination of standard and unusual enzymes.

Summary: The control of infestation by cosmopolitan lice is increasingly difficult due to resistance to traditional pediculicides. This study investigated the efficacy of ivermectin and lotilaner on killing human lice, revealing their molecular targets and mode of action. Results show that lotilaner was more effective than ivermectin in killing adult lice, providing new insights into potential alternative treatments for human lice infestation.

Functional characterization of the insulin signaling pathway in the hard tick Ixodes ricinus

Tereza Kozelkova et al.

Summary: Ticks, as blood-feeding arachnids, have the unique ability to engorge and digest large amounts of host blood, facilitating high reproductive potential. They activate blood digestive processes and ovaries maturation upon blood meal uptake through mechanisms that are largely unknown. The evolutionarily conserved Insulin Signaling Pathway (ISP) and Target of Rapamycin (TOR) pathway play crucial roles in nutritional sensing in ticks, with the insulin receptor (IrInR), AKT (IrAKT), and TOR (IrTOR) identified in hard ticks. Knock-down of these components in ticks resulted in reduced blood-feeding and reproductive capacity, highlighting the importance of investigating the roles of insulin-like peptides in tick physiological processes.
