Association between living in municipalities with high crowding conditions and poverty and mortality from COVID-19 in Mexico

Viridiana Rios et al.

Summary: This study in Mexico found that patients living in municipalities with crowded and poverty conditions had a higher risk of mortality from COVID-19, especially those with indigenous background, illiteracy, poverty, food insecurity, limited access to social security, and health services. The COVID-19 pandemic in Mexico is a systemic crisis linked to human development, affecting less developed and more vulnerable municipalities. Efforts to reduce vulnerabilities and develop strategies to address health crises like the current one are necessary.

Incidence of SARS-CoV-2 over four epidemic waves in a low-resource community in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: A prospective cohort study

Marilia Sa Carvalho et al.

Summary: This study estimated the incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infections in a slum in Rio de Janeiro over four epidemic waves. The results showed that the incidence was highest in the first wave, and lower in children compared to older participants, except in later waves when vaccination coverage of the elderly was high. Increased vaccine coverage contributed to the reduction of infection rates in the elderly. The high incidence in young people highlights the importance of vaccination in this age group.
