Engineering zinc oxide hybrid selenium nanoparticles for synergetic anti-tuberculosis treatment by combining Mycobacterium tuberculosis killings and host cell immunological inhibition

Wensen Lin et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers synthesized zinc oxide-selenium nanoparticles (ZnO-Se NPs) that combine the anti-TB activities of zinc oxide and selenium. The results showed that ZnO-Se NPs effectively killed extracellular Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) and inhibited intracellular Mtb growth. This was achieved by increasing the production of antibacterial substances and promoting host cell immune responses such as apoptosis.

Nanosized Drug Delivery Systems to Fight Tuberculosis

Tom Bourguignon et al.

Summary: Tuberculosis (TB) is the second deadliest infectious disease, and current therapies have limitations. Nanosized drug delivery systems (DDSs) have the potential to optimize TB treatment by reducing toxicity and improving efficiency. Numerous publications have shown growing interest in this field. This review explores the challenges and relevant publications related to using drug nanocarriers for TB treatment. The reviewed studies demonstrate that DDSs can optimize antibacterial effects, reduce doses and toxicity, and mitigate the emergence of resistant strains, but there is still a lack of clinical applications and in vivo proof of concept for these nanosized DDSs.

Bio-inspired polynorepinephrine based nanocoatings for reduced graphene oxide/gold nanoparticles composite for high-performance biosensing of Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Neha Bisht et al.

Summary: Polydopamine (PDA) has been widely used as a grafting and coating material for electrochemically active nanomaterials, while its sister compound, polynorepinephrine (PNE), with additional -OH groups and better coating uniformity and biocompatibility, has not been studied in biosensors. This study investigated PNE as a coating material for graphene oxide (RGO) and gold nanoparticles (Au) to develop an electrochemical genosensor for MTB detection. The results showed that RGO/PNE/Au exhibited superior biosensing performance compared to RGO/PDA/Au.

Nano-biotechnology in tumour and cancerous disease: A perspective review

Ambikesh Soni et al.

Summary: In recent years, the nanobiotechnology approach has been considered by drug manufacturers and researchers to improve the drug delivery system for tumour and cancer diseases. This article reviews current strategies to improve tumour and cancer drug delivery, focusing on biocompatibility, biodistribution, and active targeting. Nanoparticle-based drug delivery provides target-specific delivery and controlled release, offering a better therapeutic window for treatment options by eradicating diseased cells while sparing normal cells. Nanoparticle-based therapy also overcomes the challenges of treating brain tumors by breaching the blood-brain barriers, improving drug delivery to the target.

Antagonist Impact of Selenium-Based Nanoparticles Against Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Shagufta Parveen et al.

Summary: Tuberculosis (TB) has been identified as a major cause of global deaths from a single-point infectious agent, mainly due to multi-drug resistance. As a result, there is significant research interest in developing alternative treatment methodologies. The application of nanoparticles has been found to have substantial potential as a delivery medium and bactericidal agent. This study evaluated the efficacy of selenium nanoparticles in inhibiting the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, and the results showed that the synthesized selenium nanoparticles disrupted the integrity of the cell envelope and effectively inhibited its growth. This study proposes a novel approach and opens new avenues in nanoparticle-induced cell disruption strategies.
