Development and Evaluation of Hydrogel Wound Dressings Loaded with Herbal Extracts

Alexandru Gavan et al.

Summary: The current study aimed to develop carbomer based hydrogel dressings, incorporating ethanolic extracts of Rosmarinus officinalis aerial parts, Achillea millefolium and Calendula officinalis flowers. The hydrogels showed notable pharmaceutical properties, texture changes, and antimicrobial activity when the ethanolic extracts were added. The hydrogel loaded with Rosmarinus officinalis aerial parts extract and the one incorporating the blend of extracts proved to have good antimicrobial activity. More in vivo studies are needed to further support the results and these hydrogels could serve as a basis for novel wound dressing materials.
