2019 Global NAFLD Prevalence: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Michael H. Le et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the global and regional prevalence trends of NAFLD. The results showed that the overall prevalence of NAFLD is increasing, despite regional variations. South America and North America have the highest prevalence rates. The study suggests that policy makers should increase awareness of NAFLD and promote healthy lifestyle environments to reverse this trend.

Renaming NAFLD to MAFLD: Advantages and Potential Changes in Diagnosis, Pathophysiology, Treatment, and Management

Fajuan Rui et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been an increasing prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) due to the rising incidence of obesity and other metabolic diseases. To better describe this condition, experts have proposed a more appropriate term - metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD). Compared to NAFLD, MAFLD allows for a broader definition and helps exclude patients with heterogeneous liver diseases.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and risk of incident diabetes mellitus: an updated meta-analysis of 501 022 adult individuals

Alessandro Mantovani et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis shows that patients with NAFLD have a significantly increased risk of developing diabetes, and this risk rises with the severity of NAFLD. The risk is independent of age, sex, adiposity measures, and other metabolic risk factors.

Differential Clinical Characteristics and Mortality Outcomes in Persons With NAFLD and/or MAFLD

Vy H. Nguyen et al.

Summary: The study found that individuals meeting the criteria for MAFLD had more comorbidities and worse prognosis compared to those with NAFLD only. Non-NAFLD MAFLD participants had the highest cumulative incidence of all-cause mortality, followed by NAFLD-MAFLD and non-MAFLD NAFLD participants. The MAFLD criteria should be considered in the general population to identify high-risk groups for early interventions.
