Population Genomics of Nonrecessive Resistance to Bt Toxin Cry1Ac in Helicoverpa armigera From Northern China

Fang Guan et al.

Summary: Transgenic crops producing insecticidal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) have been effective in controlling key pests since 1996. However, the evolution of nonrecessive resistance in pests, particularly to Bt toxin Cry1Ac, poses a significant challenge. A study in China found that 7.5% of field-collected Helicoverpa armigera larvae were resistant to Cry1Ac, with 87% having at least one allele conferring nonrecessive resistance. Genetic mapping analysis identified a point mutation in the HaTSPAN1 gene on chromosome 10 as the primary genetic basis of nonrecessive resistance. Furthermore, another region on chromosome 26 was associated with nonrecessive resistance in some backcross families.

Global Patterns of Insect Resistance to Transgenic Bt Crops: The First 25 Years

Bruce E. Tabashnik et al.

Summary: Genetically engineered crops producing insecticidal proteins have improved pest management, but practical resistance has reduced their efficacy. Resistance has been documented in 11 pest species affecting seven countries, while 16 pest species remain susceptible. Early warnings of resistance have been observed, but further research is needed.

Bt maize can provide non-chemical pest control and enhance food safety in China

Xianming Yang et al.

Summary: This study quantitatively assesses the impact of two genetically modified Bt maize hybrids on pest feeding damage, crop yield, and food safety in China's maize belt. The results show that Bt maize can significantly reduce pest pressure, yield loss, and mycotoxin contamination compared to non-Bt hybrids. By drawing on experiences from other crop/pest systems, Bt maize can provide area-wide pest management and contribute to a progressive phase-down of chemical pesticide use, ensuring food and nutrition security while reducing environmental footprint.

Bt cotton area contraction drives regional pest resurgence, crop loss, and pesticide use

Yanhui Lu et al.

Summary: This study revealed a resurgence of the cosmopolitan bollworm Helicoverpa armigera in dynamic agro-landscapes following a reduction in Bt cotton area in North China Plain. The decrease in Bt cotton was correlated with higher levels of H. armigera population, resulting in increased yield loss and pesticide use frequency in non-Bt crops.

Practical resistance to Cry toxins and efficacy of Vip3Aa in Bt cotton against Helicoverpa zea

Fei Yang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the resistance of Helicoverpa zea, one of the most economically important pests, to Bt toxins and Bt cotton in the United States. The results showed widespread resistance of H. zea to certain Cry toxins produced by Bt cotton and corn, but not to Vip3Aa. The efficacy of Bt cotton decreased with higher survival rates in laboratory bioassays. Rigorous resistance management measures are needed to preserve the efficacy of Vip3Aa against this highly adaptable pest.

Resistance of the fall armyworm,Spodoptera frugiperda, to transgenicBacillus thuringiensisCry1F corn in the Americas: lessons and implications for Bt corn IRM in China

Fangneng Huang

Summary: The fall armyworm, a major pest of Bt crops in North and South America, has recently invaded Africa and Asia, including China, posing a threat to food security. The resistance of S. frugiperda to Cry1F corn has been widely observed in Puerto Rico, Brazil, Argentina, and the United States due to various factors such as limited modes of action and cross-resistance among Bt proteins. Strategies for integrated resistance management in China include using high dose traits, monitoring resistance, employing gene pyramiding, and avoiding planting Bt corn in areas where armyworms overwinter. Lessons from global Bt crop use can be valuable for improving resistance management programs in the Americas and promoting sustainable Bt corn technology in China.

Multiple origins of a single point mutation in the cotton bollworm tetraspanin gene confers dominant resistance to Bt cotton

Fang Guan et al.

Summary: The dominant resistance to Cry1Ac Bt cotton in northern China is increasing due to a mutation in the HaTSPAN1 gene, showing over 125-fold resistance. Research indicates that this mutation originated from at least four independent events, highlighting the need for additional resistance management in these areas.

Transgenic cotton and sterile insect releases synergize eradication of pink bollworm a century after it invaded the United States

Bruce E. Tabashnik et al.

Summary: The successful multi-tactic strategy described above effectively combated the invasive pink bollworm in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico by releasing sterile insects and planting transgenic Bt cotton. This approach synergistically reduced the pest population and led to significant economic and social benefits, demonstrating the advantages of using agricultural biotechnology in combination with classical pest control tactics.

Summary: Since its introduction in Brazil in 2013, the Old World bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera, has become a significant pest in Latin America, posing potential threats to soybean and cotton crops. If established in the United States, it may cause economic loss in Mid-Southern states where similarities with the native sibling species, Helicoverpa zea, could complicate management strategies.

Tracking the spatio-temporal change of planting area of winter wheat-summer maize cropping system in the North China Plain during 2001-2018

Jiadi Li et al.

Summary: Identifying winter wheat-summer maize distribution is crucial for agricultural water management in the North China Plain, where conflicts between food production and water scarcity exist. Analysis based on MODIS data reveals a slight increase in winter wheat-summer maize planting area from 2001 to 2018, followed by a significant decrease after 2012. The spatial distribution shows shrinking in certain areas while expansion in others, providing valuable information for optimizing crop water resource allocation.

Summary: The study found significant year effects of Helicoverpa zea damage frequency in commercial cotton throughout the Bt adoption period in the USA, with a recent increase in damage after 2012. Landscape-level Bt crop production intensity over time was positively associated with the risk of Helicoverpa zea damage in two- and three-toxin pyramided Bt cotton. Damage from Helicoverpa zea also varied across Bt toxin types in spatially replicated on-farm studies.
