Physiological insight into the conserved properties of Caenorhabditis elegans acid-sensing degenerin/epithelia sodium channels

Eva Kaulich et al.

Summary: Acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs) are important for physiological functions and disease. We discovered two acid-sensitive groups and identified seven acid-sensitive channels in the Caenorhabditis elegans DEG/ENaC family, three of which are functionally similar to vertebrate ASICs. These channels are expressed in both neurons and non-neuronal tissue, indicating functional diversity.

Distinct roles for two Caenorhabditis elegans acid-sensing ion channels in an ultradian clock

Eva Kaulich et al.

Summary: Biological clocks are essential for an organism's health, regulating the periodicity of behavior and metabolism. This study identifies two acid-sensing ion channels with different proton sensing properties and explores their role in the defecation motor program (DMP) of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. The findings demonstrate the importance of these channels in pH regulation, calcium signaling, and the generation of an ultradian oscillator.
