Potential impact of ambient temperature on maternal blood pressure and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy: A nationwide multicenter study based on the China birth cohort

Summary: Limited evidence shows that there is an association between ambient temperature and blood pressure levels of pregnant women. A study conducted in China found that exposure to cold temperatures in the second and third trimesters increased the risk of high blood pressure and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, especially among women aged 35 and older or from North China. Overall, the second and third trimesters are the critical periods for the impact of ambient temperature on blood pressure and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy.

Ambient air pollution and cardiovascular diseases: An umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses

Summary: This umbrella review summarizes the current epidemiological evidence linking ambient air pollution and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), with a focus on geographical differences and vulnerable subpopulations. The review found strong evidence that higher levels of ambient air pollution increase the risk of CVDs, especially all-cause CVD mortality, stroke, and ischemic heart diseases. The associations were stronger in Asian countries and among vulnerable subpopulations.

Conversely, lower blood pressure was observed in children exposed to higher temperatures and better street connectivity during childhood. The findings highlight the importance of designing cities with healthier environments to reduce long-term risks of hypertension and cardiovascular diseases.
