An insight into the initial Coulombic efficiency of carbon-based anode materials for potassium-ion batteries

Bo Wang et al.

Summary: Potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) are considered a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to the abundant resource of potassium and low cost, attracting increasing research interest. Despite efforts to improve electrochemical performance, there are still obstacles to commercialization, such as the unsatisfactory initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) of carbonaceous anodes. Key strategies to improve ICE include structural design, defects engineering, and binder/electrolyte optimization.

Correlation between Potassium-Ion Storage Mechanism and Local Structural Evolution in Hard Carbon Materials

Jia Xu et al.

Summary: Hard carbons are promising anode materials for potassium-ion batteries due to their low cost, diverse precursors, easy-to-design nature, and excellent electrochemical performance. However, the relationship between the structure and potassium storage mechanism of hard carbons has not been clearly understood. In this study, a series of hard carbon materials with adjustable structures were synthesized to investigate the structure-mechanism relationships. The results showed that the evolution of the structural domain unit of hard carbon changes from amorphous to pseudographite and then to graphitelike domain with increasing temperature. The amorphous domain contributes to surface-controlled absorption behavior, while the pseudographite and graphitelike domains show diffusion-controlled insertion behavior. The hybrid amorphous and pseudographite domain structure exhibits the best electrochemical performance.

Optimized electrode formulation for enhanced performance of graphite in K-ion batteries

Badre Larhrib et al.

Summary: This study optimizes the electrode structure of potassium ion batteries by adjusting the graphite electrode formulation and using different amounts and functional group contents of carboxylated styrene butadiene rubber (SBR). The results show that appropriate SBR significantly improves the electrode structure/cohesion/elasticity, leading to better power performance and capacity retention. Further improvements are expected by tuning electrolyte formulation, benefiting the development of high energy potassium ion batteries.

Hard carbon key properties allow for the achievement of high Coulombic efficiency and high volumetric capacity in Na-ion batteries

Adrian Beda et al.

Summary: The study found that the electrode porosity decreases linearly with the graphite interlayer space, reaching the lowest value for high temperature treated carbons. However, no clear correlation could be established between electrode porosity and tapped density due to various interplaying parameters affecting the latter. Compact carbon electrodes exhibited high volumetric capacity and an initial Coulombic efficiency of 92%, correlated with specific surface area and the amount of active sites.
