Uncovering the Fundamental Role of Interlayer Water in Charge Storage for Bilayered V2O5•nH2O Xerogel Cathode Materials

Qiangchao Sun et al.

Summary: Interlayer engineering is a promising strategy to modify the structure of layered vanadium-based oxides for optimized ion-diffusion capability. This study explores the role of interlayer crystal water in tuning the charge storage properties and finds that regulating interlayer water content can enhance the reversibility of zinc ion diffusion and improve the cycling stability of V2O5·nH2O electrodes. Density functional theory calculations suggest that modulated electron structure in V2O5·nH2O materials provides a favorable electrostatic environment for reversible Zn2+ diffusion.

Anomalous Zn2+ Storage Behavior in Dual-Ion-In-Sequence Reconstructed Vanadium Oxides

Hanmei Jiang et al.

Summary: In this study, a new dual-ion-in-sequence intercalation strategy is proposed to address the structural instability and sluggish diffusion kinetics of vanadium oxides in ZIBs. The Zn2+ storage mechanism evolves from solid-state ion diffusion kinetic into intercalation pseudocapacitance, resulting from the enlarged interlayer spacing. The improved ionic diffusivity, intercalation pseudocapacitance, and fast charge transferability contribute to the impressive rate capability and cycling stability of the ZIBs.

Engineering p-Band Center of Oxygen Boosting H+ Intercalation in δ-MnO2 for Aqueous Zinc Ion Batteries

Jianhua Zhang et al.

Summary: A critical modification of pre-intercalating metal ions in the MnO2 interlayer is reported to modulate the H+ intercalation behavior in aqueous zinc ion batteries. By optimizing the metal-O bond type and covalency degree, the p-band center of O (epsilon(p)) can be effectively tuned to promote the balance between H+ adsorption and desorption, resulting in enhanced rate capability. This work highlights the significance of epsilon(p) as a descriptor for H+ intercalation in ZIBs.
