Accelerated Discovery and Design of Ultralow Lattice Thermal Conductivity Materials Using Chemical Bonding Principles

Jiangang He et al.

Summary: An effective strategy of weakening interatomic interactions and suppressing lattice thermal conductivity based on chemical bonding principles is presented, leading to the discovery of 30 compounds with (ultra)low lattice thermal conductivities by screening the local coordination environments of crystalline compounds. This work not only provides insights into the physical origin of low lattice thermal conductivity in a large family of copper/silver-based compounds, but also offers an efficient approach to discover and design materials with targeted thermal transport properties.

A review on single crystal and thin film Si-Ge alloy: growth and applications

Ranita Basu

Summary: The IV-IV binary alloy Si-Ge has attracted a lot of attention for its excellent performance in various fields. Although Si-Ge alloy can achieve crystals with any Ge content, the wide gap between the solidus and liquidus lines hinders the formation of Si-Ge bulk crystals with uniform Ge content. Single crystal silicon-germanium has been proven to be the most economical solution for wireless backhaul information transmission with high bandwidth. The superior electronic mobility of Si-Ge compared to Si has also established its place in telecommunication, computer technologies, consumer electronics, space, and aerospace applications.

Anharmonicity and Effect of the Nanostructuring on the Lattice Dynamics of CrSi2

A. Moll et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that reducing grain size and residual microstrains can effectively reduce the lattice thermal conductivity of chromium disilicide, thus improving its performance. Additionally, in nanocrystalline CrSi2, there is a spectral weight transfer phenomenon that leads to a significant decrease in lattice thermal conductivity.

Origins of low lattice thermal conductivity of Pb1-xSnxTe alloys for thermoelectric applications

Rafal Knura et al.

Summary: Lead telluride is a well-known material for converting heat into electricity, but the mechanisms of heat transport in PbTe-alloys are not fully understood. This study examines the origins of phonon scattering in Pb1-xSnxTe compounds and how changes in interatomic pair potentials affect lattice thermal conductivity. It also proposes new guidelines for modifying thermal transport in PbTe-based alloys and highlights the potential for enhancing energy conversion in these compounds with low thermal conductivity.
