Oral Candida Predicts Streptococcus mutans Emergence in Underserved US Infants

N. Alkhars et al.

Summary: The study found that oral Candida and cariogenic bacteria Streptococcus mutans colonization in infants increased rapidly after birth in low-income and racial-minority backgrounds. Early colonization of oral Candida was associated with an increased risk of S. mutans emergence, leading to the occurrence of early childhood caries (ECC).

Whole genome sequencing of a clinical drug resistant Candida albicans isolate reveals known and novel mutations in genes involved in resistance acquisition mechanisms

Roy A. Khalaf et al.

Summary: This study analyzed point mutations in genes related to antifungal resistance in Candida albicans and investigated the correlation between resistance, virulence, and ergosterol content. The results showed that mutations in resistance genes were associated with increased ergosterol content, but there was no difference in virulence potential between the resistant isolate and the susceptible strain. This suggests that antifungal resistance and virulence potential may not be directly correlated in this specific antifungal resistant isolate.

The Interactions Between Candida albicans and Mucosal Immunity

Yujie Zhou et al.

Summary: Mucosa acts as a barrier against external pathogens, but compromised immune surveillance can lead to pathogen invasion and subsequent diseases. Monitoring and controlling pathogenic microorganisms through mucosal immunity is crucial. The interaction between Candida albicans and host mucosal immune defenses plays a key role in preventing fungal infections.
