A new oleanane-skeleton triterpene isolated from Coffea canephora

Minh Hao Hoang et al.

Summary: Extensive fractionation of the n-hexane extract from dried powdered trunks of Coffea canephora led to the isolation of a new oleanane-skeleton triterpene, coffecanolic acid, along with three known analogues. These compounds showed higher inhibitory activities against alpha-glucosidase compared to the positive control acarbose, with compound 1 demonstrating the most potent inhibitory activity.

Wood degradation by Fomitiporia mediterranea M. Fischer: Physiologic, metabolomic and proteomic approaches

Marion Schilling et al.

Summary: The aim of this study is to understand the molecular mechanisms used by Fmed to degrade wood structure, focusing on its potential adaptation to grapevine wood. The results show that Fmed has a higher degradation ability on grapevine wood compared to other wood species, possibly due to the relative overproduction of oxidoreductases.

Pruning Quality Effects on Desiccation Cone Installation and Wood Necrotization in Three Grapevine Cultivars in France

Emilie Bruez et al.

Summary: Experimental pruning studies were conducted in vineyards in France, USA, and Australia to investigate the effects of pruning quality on desiccation cone installation and wood necrotization. The results showed that pruning method and grape variety significantly influenced the length of necrosis and the necrotization rate of desiccation cones.

Grapevine Wood-Degrading Activity of Fomitiporia mediterranea M. Fisch.: A Focus on the Enzymatic Pathway Regulation

Andrea Pacetti et al.

Summary: Fomitiporia mediterranea is a fungus associated with decay in grapevine wood, and its degradation pathways and enzyme activity show significant intraspecific variability. The study suggests that its role in foliar symptoms may have been underestimated, and fungal strain and vine variety are important factors in wood degradation.

Diversity of Omega Glutathione Transferases in mushroom-forming fungi revealed by phylogenetic, transcriptomic, biochemical and structural approaches

Thomas Perrot et al.

Summary: The Omega class of glutathione transferases (GSTs) forms a distinct group with a catalytic cysteine residue, and fungal GSTOs are divided into two Types A and B with differences in catalytic residue and enzyme regulation. The ability of GSTOs to bind antioxidant molecules and adapt to new environments may contribute to the multiplication of these enzymes in fungi.

Evaluation and optimisation of direct transesterification methods for the assessment of lipid accumulation in oleaginous filamentous fungi

Anne Marie Langseter et al.

Summary: The study evaluated three common direct transesterification methods for processing fungal biomass, finding that the Lewis and Lepage methods are suitable for lipid analysis of oleaginous filamentous fungi. However, some of the transesterification yields obtained may need correction, indicating the importance of careful selection and implementation of internal standards for gas chromatography.

Summary: Microorganisms associated with termites have been identified as a valuable resource for discovering new chemical scaffolds or active metabolites. Through the analysis of strain extracts, a molecular network was generated, leading to the identification of an active extract of Penicillium sclerotiorum SNB-CN111 with potential pharmacological properties. The chemical diversity of the P. sclerotiorum metabolome exceeded previous literature reports, facilitating the discovery of new azaphilones with potential biological activities.

White Rot Fungi (Hymenochaetales) and Esca of Grapevine: Insights from Recent Microbiome Studies

Giovanni Del Frari et al.

Summary: Esca is a major grapevine trunk disease that affects vineyards in the Northern hemisphere, with disputed etiology and epidemiology due to various internal and external symptoms and wood pathogens. While the role of pathogenic fungi in wood symptoms is well assessed, their impact on leaf symptoms remains uncertain. Recent studies focus on the microbiological aspect of esca, particularly the involvement of Hymenochaetales, in vineyards. The presence of Hymenochaetales and tracheomycotic fungi is believed to be a prerequisite for leaf symptoms, but further investigation is needed to understand their relationship with grapevines and other factors.
