Optimization of a commercial Histoplasma galactomannan EIA test in a population from an endemic area of histoplasmosis in southern Brazil

Bianca dos Santos Blan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to optimize the IMMY's Clarus (R) Histoplasma GM enzyme immunoassay (EIA) by evaluating the best cut-off in the semi-quantitative (SQ-HGM EIA). The new cut-off of 0.8 EIA units for SQ-HGM EIA demonstrated a sensitivity of 88% and specificity of 98.7%. This study is important for the diagnosis of disseminated histoplasmosis in a population from Southern Brazil and also reduces the cost associated with testing.

Summary: The study aimed to describe the clinical, epidemiological, and mycological features of patients with PDH and HIV evaluated in a tertiary hospital in Peru. A retrospective study was conducted to analyze the data of patients diagnosed with PDH and HIV between 2000 and 2019, using measures of central tendency and dispersion for quantitative variables, and absolute and relative frequencies for qualitative variables.

Disseminated Histoplasmosis in Persons with HIV/AIDS, Southern Brazil, 2010-2019

Rossana Patricia Basso et al.

Summary: In this study, disseminated histoplasmosis (DH) in HIV patients over a span of 10 years was evaluated in southern Brazil. The findings revealed an incidence rate of 12 cases per 1,000 hospitalizations and a mortality rate of 35%. Tuberculosis often complicated the diagnosis of DH, highlighting the necessity for more sensitive methods of suspicion and investigation in the region.

Summary: The study found that symptoms of fungal diseases may resemble bacterial or viral pneumonia, except when certain uncommon symptoms are present, such as solitary pulmonary nodule and enlarged lymph nodes. Healthcare providers should consider the possibility of fungal diseases when diagnosing and treating patients with pneumonia.

Diagnostic accuracy of antigen detection in urine and molecular assays testing in different clinical samples for the diagnosis of progressive disseminated histoplasmosis in patients living with HIV/AIDS: A prospective multicenter study in Mexico

Areli Martinez-Gamboa et al.

Summary: Histoplasmosis, caused by Histoplasma capsulatum, is a common infection in the Americas, and can be severe in people living with HIV. Rapid and accurate diagnosis is crucial, and urine antigen detection tests have shown excellent performance in diagnosing disseminated histoplasmosis in PLWHIV, impacting early diagnosis and treatment outcomes.

Endemic and Other Dimorphic Mycoses in The Americas

Shawn R. Lockhart et al.

Summary: Endemic fungi are thermally dimorphic fungi with limited geographic range that can cause primary disease and opportunistic infections, posing a significant medical burden on immunocompromised individuals and in resource-limited settings. The Americas are the primary home to endemic fungi, including multiple genera of fungi with symptoms similar to other diseases, often leading to delayed diagnosis and highlighting the importance of new taxonomic changes.

A Rapid Screening Program for Histoplasmosis, Tuberculosis, and Cryptococcosis Reduces Mortality in HIV Patients from Guatemala

Narda Medina et al.

Summary: Opportunistic infections (OIs) and advanced HIV disease (AHD) are major contributors to HIV-related mortality in Guatemala. The incidence of OIs in newly diagnosed HIV patients was 21%, with histoplasmosis being the most common. Patients with OIs had a significantly higher mortality rate, but a program in Guatemala successfully reduced OI mortality and increased OI treatment rates.
