Molecular surveillance of tuberculosis-causing mycobacteria in wastewater

Hlengiwe N. Mtetwa et al.

Summary: The study in Durban, South Africa, detected total mycobacteria and members of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) in untreated wastewater, including some related to tuberculosis infection in animals. Although lower concentrations were found in treated wastewater, the treatment configuration did not impact the removal of these bacteria.

One Health and surveillance of zoonotic tuberculosis in selected low-income, middle-income and high-income countries: A systematic review

Rodrigo de Macedo Couto et al.

Summary: This study aims to describe zoonotic tuberculosis (zTB) surveillance programs in WHO signatory countries and assess the relationship between the disease and a country's income level and risk of M. bovis transmission. The findings reveal weaknesses in global zTB surveillance, leading to a lack of information and understanding of disease burden, especially in countries at high risk for M. bovis transmission. Efforts are needed to promote intersectoral policies and implement the One Health strategy.

Mycobacterium microti at the Environment and Wildlife Interface

Valentina Tagliapietra et al.

Summary: This study indicates that wild rodents, particularly Apodemus sylvaticus, Microtus sp., and Apodemus flavicollis, may play essential roles in the maintenance of Mycobacterium microti infections in wild boar by ingestion or contact with infected excreta or contaminated environments at animal aggregation sites.

Operationalising the One Health approach in India: facilitators of and barriers to effective cross-sector convergence for zoonoses prevention and control

F. A. Asaaga et al.

Summary: This study explores the facilitators of and barriers to successful convergence between the human, animal, and environmental health sectors in India to address zoonotic diseases. Despite the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration, factors like limited policy visibility, conflicting departmental priorities, and institutional capacities hinder effective collaboration. Strengthening national policy frameworks and building on existing informal relationships and collaboration platforms are suggested as ways forward for improved disease surveillance and interventions.

Mycobacterium microti Infections in Free-Ranging Red Deer (Cervus elaphus)

Giovanni Ghielmetti et al.

Summary: This article reports three cases of M. microti infections in free-ranging red deer, with manifestations including pyogranulomatous pleuropneumonia and granulomas on the pericardium. Phylogenetic analysis revealed independent infection events without host-adapted genotype. Awareness of the pathogenicity and zoonotic potential of M. microti is important for personnel involved in bovine tuberculosis-monitoring programs.
