An injectable and self-healing hydrogel with dual physical crosslinking for in-situ bone formation

Tao Yu et al.

Summary: Although hydrogels have been widely studied for their biocompatibility and plasticity, they have limitations in bone tissue engineering due to their inadequate mechanical properties and lack of osteogenic activity. To overcome these limitations, a new alendronate (ALN)-Ca2+/Mg2+ doped hydrogel was developed based on a mechanically resilient host-guest macromer (HGM) hydrogel. The upgraded CMS hydrogel exhibited improved mechanical properties and promoted bone cell proliferation and differentiation. In vivo experiments demonstrated that the CMS hydrogel had better bone regeneration ability compared to the HGM hydrogel. The updated CMS hydrogel shows significant potential for bone tissue engineering applications.

Regenerative Efficacy of Supercritical Carbon Dioxide-Derived Bone Graft Putty in Rabbit Bone Defect Model

Yen-Lung Chiu et al.

Summary: Bone defects can be caused by various reasons, and bone grafts are commonly used as substitutes. The use of supercritical carbon dioxide in the production of bone grafts is a new trend. An experiment combining bone graft powder and acellular dermal matrix powder in a putty material showed promising results in rabbit models, demonstrating good stickiness and cohesiveness.

Bone regeneration materials and their application over 20 years: A bibliometric study and systematic review

Xudong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively assessed the existing research and recent progress on bone regeneration materials (BRMs) and explored potential future directions. Through literature review and data mining analysis, it was found that China, the United States, and Italy were the most productive countries. Acta Biomaterialia and Biomaterials were the most prolific journals in the BRM field. Recent research focused on extracellular matrices, hydrogel materials, and drug delivery systems. The research hotspots included growth factors, bone morphogenetic protein-2, and mesenchymal stem cells. Future relevant research fields will focus on composite scaffolds, 3D printing technology, and antibacterial activity.

Comparison of bone formation mediated by bone morphogenetic protein delivered by nanoclay gels with clinical techniques (autograft and InductOs®) in an ovine bone model

Cameron Black et al.

Summary: Development of appropriate growth factor delivery strategies and preclinical models are crucial for bone tissue regeneration. This study investigated the effect of a growth factor delivery system combined with Laponite gel on bone formation in a sheep model. The results showed that Laponite had excellent biocompatibility and the ability to deliver active BMP-2, indicating its potential for bone fracture therapeutics.

Nicolaus Siemssen et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the quality of cancellous tissue from human femoral heads using the Tabea FK score and found good correlation between the primary radiologic clinical score and macroscopic second review, as well as histology and macroscopic second review. The study recommended the Tabea FK score as a quality assurance tool in bone banks.

Strategies for Bone Regeneration: From Graft to Tissue Engineering

Giulia Battafarano et al.

Summary: Bone is a regenerative organ with self-renewal ability, but impaired bone healing may require medical intervention using natural or synthetic bone grafts for regeneration. Tissue engineering relies on the combination of cells, growth factors, and scaffold materials, with various materials and cell types being investigated for bone regeneration strategies.

The Effect of Bisphosphonates on Fracture Healing Time and Changes in Bone Mass Density: A Meta-Analysis

Yongquan Gao et al.

Summary: Bisphosphonates do not significantly affect fracture healing time in fracture patients, but they do increase bone density, prevent osteoporosis, and inhibit both bone resorption and formation markers. Early application of bisphosphonates after injury in the appropriate patient population should be considered.

Pro-angiogenic and osteogenic composite scaffolds of fibrin, alginate and calcium phosphate for bone tissue engineering

Nupur Kohli et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop new composite biomaterials with pro-angiogenic and osteogenic properties for bone tissue engineering applications. The materials were characterized as porous with evenly distributed deposits of CaP precursor phases, which facilitated cell adhesion, proliferation, migration, and differentiation down the osteogenic pathway. In addition, results from the CAM assay showed that the scaffolds were pro-angiogenic and biocompatible, highlighting their potential for further pre-clinical research prior to clinical translation.
