Global prevalence of autism: A systematic review update

Jinan Zeidan et al.

Summary: This article reviews the prevalence of autism worldwide, considering the impact of geographic, ethnic, and socioeconomic factors on prevalence estimates. Approximately 1/100 children are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder around the world. Prevalence estimates increased over time and varied greatly within and across sociodemographic groups. These findings reflect changes in the definition of autism and differences in the methodology and contexts of prevalence studies.

The Lack of Alterations in Metabolites in the Medial Prefrontal Cortex and Amygdala, but Their Associations with Autistic Traits, Empathy, and Personality Traits in Adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Preliminary Study

Yukihiko Shirayama et al.

Summary: Using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy, we compared brain metabolites in adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and control subjects. The results showed no significant differences in brain metabolites between ASD subjects and the control group in the medial prefrontal cortex and amygdala. However, there were significant correlations between localized brain metabolites and autistic traits, empathy deficits, and personality traits in ASD subjects.

Mitochondrial morphology is associated with respiratory chain uncoupling in autism spectrum disorder

Richard E. Frye et al.

Summary: This study found that changes in mitochondrial morphology in children with ASD were associated with the activity of ETC complexes and symptom severity. ASD participants with elevated Complex IV activity showed more typical mitochondrial morphology and milder symptoms. Further research is needed to explore the molecular mechanisms behind these unique metabolic changes.

Integration of machine learning and genome-scale metabolic modeling identifies multi-omics biomarkers for radiation resistance

Joshua E. Lewis et al.

Summary: Resistance to ionizing radiation is a major clinical challenge in cancer treatment. Personalized prediction of tumor radiosensitivity is hindered by insufficient accuracy of existing machine learning classifiers, which do not include metabolomics data. By integrating metabolic features with other multi-omics datasets using machine learning, improved classification accuracy can be achieved, facilitating the development of precision medicine workflows for cancer treatment.
