Elevated levels of interleukin-12/23p40 may serve as a potential indicator of dysfunctional heart rate variability in type 2 diabetes

A. M. Wegeberg et al.

Summary: This study found that increased serum levels of IL-12/IL-23p40 and ICAM-1 were associated with decreased heart rate variability in type 2 diabetes patients, while VEGF-C levels were related to response to standing. The results suggest significant associations between neurocardiac regulation and serum markers, indicating potential systemic changes in inflammation, endothelial, and lymphatic function that collectively impact cardiovascular function. Further exploration of IL-12/IL-23p40, ICAM-1, and VEGF-C as cardiovascular biomarkers in type 2 diabetes is warranted for potential improvement in patient care strategies.

Gastrointestinal function in diabetes is affected regardless of asymptomatic appearance

Anne-Marie Wegeberg et al.

Summary: Gastrointestinal function is altered in asymptomatic individuals with diabetes, with prolongation of colonic and whole-gut transit times in type 1 diabetes patients, decreased transpyloric pH rise in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and decreased ileocaecal pH fall in type 2 diabetes. Further investigations are needed to identify risk factors or predictors for diabetic enteropathy, especially when glycaemic control is impaired.

Alteration of interleukin-10-producing Type 1 regulatory cells in autoimmune diseases

Silvia Gregori et al.

Summary: This review highlights the role of IL-10-producing Tr1 cells in controlling autoimmune diseases and discusses possible approaches to restore their function and number. Studies have found reduced frequency and/or function of cell subsets involved in Tr1 cell induction in patients with autoimmunity, which may impact Tr1 cell frequency. IL-10 is a crucial cytokine involved in the induction and functions of Tr1 cells.

Low-grade inflammation in type 2 diabetes: a cross-sectional study from a Danish diabetes outpatient clinic

Tina Okdahl et al.

Summary: The level of low-grade inflammation in type 2 diabetes is associated with obesity, glycaemic regulation, therapeutical management, sex, and complications. Our results underline the importance of addressing inflammatory issues in type 2 diabetes, as these may predispose for crippling comorbidities.

The Role of Inflammatory Mediators in the Development of Gastrointestinal Motility Disorders

Tibor Docsa et al.

Summary: Feeding intolerance and ileus are common complications in critically ill, surgical, and trauma patients, leading to longer hospital stays, increased infections, readmission rates, and medical costs. Current medical treatment for ileus is ineffective and has serious side effects. Inflammatory mediators play a critical role in the development of ileus, but their direct effects on gastrointestinal cells are not well understood.

Gastrointestinal symptoms and cardiac vagal tone in type 1 diabetes correlates with gut transit times and motility index

Anne-Marie L. Wegeberg et al.

Summary: The study found that colonic transit time correlated with postprandial fullness (P = .01) and constipation (P = .03), while decreased colonic motility index correlated with diarrhea (P = .01) and decreased bloating (P < .05). Symptoms were not correlated with gastric or small bowel transit time or motility index.

Experimental postoperative ileus: is Th2 immune response involved?

Sisi Lin et al.

Summary: The study found that postoperative ileus (POI) is not only associated with Th1 cells, but also involves an increase in Th2 cells and Th2 cytokines, as well as activation of mast cells. In addition, POI can induce activation of the NF-kappa B and p38 MAPK signaling pathways mediated by ROS.
