The adiponectin signalling pathway - A therapeutic target for the cardiac complications of type 2 diabetes?

Abhipree Sharma et al.

Summary: Diabetes is associated with an increased risk of heart failure known as diabetic cardiomyopathy. Adiponectin, a cardioprotective adipokine, is downregulated in diabetes and obesity, leading to reduced cardioprotection. This review summarizes the evidence linking suppressed adiponectin signaling pathway to cardiac dysfunction in diabetes and discusses potential therapeutic approaches for diabetic cardiomyopathy.

Metabolic and Epigenetic Regulation by Estrogen in Adipocytes

Jan-Inge Bjune et al.

Summary: Sex hormones play an important role in the differences between males and females in terms of body fat distribution and associated disease risk. Estrogen, in particular, is associated with more fat storage on hips and thighs rather than in visceral depots. It exerts its effects on adipocytes through estrogen receptors, protecting against adipose inflammation and fibrosis. The exact mechanisms of estrogen-dependent body fat distribution are not fully understood but involve signaling pathways, autophagy suppression, and epigenetic regulation. More research is needed to understand the specific effects of estrogen on different adipocyte subtypes and its role in sexual dimorphisms and obesity-related disease risk.

Inhibitory effect of androgens on white adipose tissue thermogenic capacity

Adipokines, Hepatokines and Myokines: Focus on Their Role and Molecular Mechanisms in Adipose Tissue Inflammation

Yakun Ren et al.

Summary: Chronic low-grade inflammation in adipose tissue is a key characteristic of obesity and contributes to various metabolic disorders. This inflammation is regulated by adipokines, hepatokines, and myokines secreted from different organs, which play either pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory roles in adipose tissue inflammation. Understanding these organokines and their mechanisms could lead to potential therapeutic targets for obesity-induced inflammation.

Summary: Estrogen receptors play crucial roles in regulating various physiological processes in humans. Abnormal signaling of these receptors can lead to a wide range of disorders. This review provides an overview of ER alpha, ER beta, and GPER1, highlighting their functions in both health and disease. Additionally, it discusses the potential clinical applications and challenges associated with these receptors.

The New Role of SGLT2 Inhibitors in the Management of Heart Failure: Current Evidence and Future Perspective

Saverio Muscoli et al.

Summary: SGLT2 inhibitors are a new class of drugs used for treating type 2 diabetes. Recent research has shown their effectiveness in managing heart failure by reducing the risk of cardiovascular events, hospitalization, and mortality. The mechanism behind this effect is still unclear, but it is believed that they lower blood pressure and improve endothelial function. This review focuses on the results of clinical trials investigating the use of SGLT2 inhibitors in heart failure, regardless of the patients' diabetic status. Various SGLT2 inhibitors are compared to explore their potential as a treatment option for patients with reduced ejection fraction and preserved ejection fraction.

Estrogens as regulator of hematopoietic stem cell, immune cells and bone biology

Rupali Sani Kumar et al.

Summary: Hematopoietic stem cells provide a continuous supply of all immune cells through proliferation and differentiation decisions, with these decisions being controlled by the local bone marrow environment and long-range signals. Female longevity seems to depend on the major female sex hormone, estrogen, under homeostasis and disease conditions. Estrogen has effects on HSC, immune cells, and bone biology, with Estradiol (E2) being extensively investigated while the effects of other estrogens such as E1, E3, and E4 are starting to be understood. The clinical effects of estrogen as hormone therapy on HSC and immune cells are also discussed.

Sex Differences in the Effect of Testosterone on Adipose Tissue Insulin Resistance From Overweight to Obese Adults

Xiaohui Li et al.

Summary: Adipose tissue insulin resistance (adipose-IR) in males is higher than in females with similar BMI levels. Adipose-IR increases progressively from overweight to class III obesity in both genders, but is significantly higher in males than females in the class III obesity group. Testosterone levels are negatively correlated with adipose-IR in males, while positively correlated in females. Low testosterone levels may contribute to more severe adipose-IR in obese males.
