Pancreatic Cancer in Celiac Disease Patients-A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Iga Gromny et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of celiac disease (CD) on the risk of pancreatic cancer (PC) through a systematic review and meta-analysis. The results indicated that patients with CD are more prone to develop PC when they have other malignancies. The association between CD and PC remains uncertain and further research is needed.

Severity of acute pancreatitis in patients with inflammatory bowel disease in the era of biologics: A propensity-score-matched analysis using a nationwide database in Japan

Rintaro Moroi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the severity of acute pancreatitis (AP) in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and the effect of biologics on the severity of AP. The results showed that the severity of AP in patients with IBD may be lower than that in the general population, and biologics for IBD may not worsen its severity. Further prospective studies are needed to clarify the severity of AP in patients with IBD.

The features and clinical outcomes of inflammatory bowel disease associated with autoimmune pancreatitis A greater awareness is needed

Maria Cristina Conti Bellocchi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the prevalence, endoscopic features, and outcome of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in association with autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP). It was found that the prevalence of ulcerative colitis (UC) in AIP patients was 17%, with acute pancreatitis as the most common presentation and both diffuse and focal pancreatic involvement observed. When UC was present at AIP onset, there may be a delay in its diagnosis, and fecal calprotectin levels could play a role in this setting.

Finding Predictors of Azathioprine-Induced Pancreatitis in Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Marta Freitas et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively reviewed IBD patients treated with azathioprine from January 2013 to July 2020, finding that 7.5% of patients developed azathioprine-induced pancreatitis, but all patients had a mild course of the disease that resolved after discontinuation of the drug. Smoking, single daily dose of AZA, and concomitant use of budesonide were identified as risk factors for AIP.

The enteric nervous system in gastrointestinal disease etiology

Amy Marie Holland et al.

Summary: The enteric nervous system (ENS) plays a crucial role in regulating gastrointestinal function, and its dysfunction is closely linked to gastrointestinal diseases. Recent research indicates that the multifaceted connections between the ENS, intestinal epithelium, immune system, and gut microbiome are essential for maintaining gastrointestinal homeostasis. Therefore, the ENS plays a significant role in the pathogenesis of enteric neuropathies, inflammatory bowel diseases, and colorectal cancer.

IL-33 as a Critical Cytokine for Inflammation and Fibrosis in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases and Pancreatitis

Masayuki Kurimoto et al.

Summary: IL-33 is a pleiotropic cytokine produced by a variety of cells, including antigen-presenting cells, epithelial cells, and fibroblasts, promoting inflammation and fibrosis. It activates pro-inflammatory T helper type 1 and type 2 responses, contributing to the development of inflammatory bowel diseases and pancreatitis. Recent studies suggest IL-33 as a potential therapeutic target for these conditions.
