Real-life Evidence of Lower Lung Virulence in COVID-19 Inpatients Infected with SARS-CoV-2 Omicron Variant Compared to Wild-Type and Delta SARS-CoV-2 Pneumonia

Mattia Trunfio et al.

Summary: In vitro and animal models have shown that the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron lineage has lower replication capacity and virulence in the lower respiratory airways compared to the wild type and other variants of concern. Clinical observations of adult patients with Omicron pneumonia in our hospital in Turin, Italy also demonstrated lower lung involvement, less tendency to lung consolidation, and better respiratory function compared to wild type and other variants. Adjusted for demographic factors, previous immunity, and comorbidities, Omicron pneumonia was still associated with a lower risk of respiratory failure compared to wild type and other variants. These findings are consistent with in vitro and animal model studies and may explain why Omicron infection has been associated with lower mortality and hospitalization in humans.

The cytokine storm and COVID-19

Biying Hu et al.

Summary: COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, has become a global pandemic since its emergence in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, posing a serious threat to public health. Close contact and respiratory droplets are the main modes of transmission. The cytokine storm is closely associated with disease severity and mortality, emphasizing the importance of studying and treating the cytokine storm in COVID-19.

The role of antirheumatics in patients with COVID-19

Christoffer B. Nissen et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to over 2 million deaths worldwide, with immune modulators and immunosuppressive drugs proposed as treatments. Further studies are needed to confirm the efficacy and safety, with potential for more clarity on the use of other anti-rheumatic drugs in the next 12 months.

SARS-CoV-2 Switches 'on' MAPK and NFκB Signaling via the Reduction of Nuclear DUSP1 and DUSP5 Expression

Swati Goel et al.

Summary: The study discovered that SARS-CoV-2 infection leads to decreased expression of DUSP1 and DUSP5 genes, resulting in increased activity of MAPK and NF-κB signaling and enhanced expression of proinflammatory cytokines. Therapeutically, the use of chloroquine and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can counteract this effect.

Mechanisms of Nausea and Vomiting: Current Knowledge and Recent Advances in Intracellular Emetic Signaling Systems

Weixia Zhong et al.

Summary: Nausea and vomiting are considered defense mechanisms triggered by threatening toxins/drugs/bacteria/viruses/fungi entering the body. Vomiting involves forceful removal of gastrointestinal contents, while nausea is a subjective sensation that is more difficult to study in nonhuman species.
