Effects of a Combination of Empagliflozin Plus Metformin vs. Metformin Monotherapy on NAFLD Progression in Type 2 Diabetes: The IMAGIN Pilot Study

Alfredo Caturano et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the effect of a combination therapy of empagliflozin + metformin vs. metformin monotherapy on the progression of NAFLD in type 2 diabetic patients. The results showed that after a 6-month follow-up, the combination therapy group had significant improvements in weight, glycated hemoglobin, ALT, CAP parameter, and steatosis degree compared to the control group.

Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), Type 2 Diabetes, and Non-viral Hepatocarcinoma: Pathophysiological Mechanisms and New Therapeutic Strategies

Erica Vetrano et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the incidence of non-viral hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which is likely attributed to the rising prevalence of metabolic syndrome, obesity, and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Numerous epidemiological studies have established a link between T2DM and the development of HCC, highlighting diabetes as an independent risk factor. Understanding the underlying mechanisms, such as inflammation, oxidative stress, and alterations in gut microbiota, is crucial in preventing liver fibrosis and HCC.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Elizabeth E. Powell et al.

Summary: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common global health issue with significant associations with metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes, leading to serious complications like cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. While cardiovascular disease and extrahepatic malignancy are the main causes of death in NAFLD patients, advanced liver fibrosis is a key prognostic marker for liver-related outcomes and overall mortality.

The complex link between NAFLD and type 2 diabetes mellitus - mechanisms and treatments

Giovanni Targher et al.

Summary: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) have a complex relationship with each other, influencing the risk of adverse clinical outcomes. The severity of NAFLD is directly related to the risk of developing T2DM, while improvement of NAFLD may lower the risk of T2DM.

Epigenetics in NAFLD/NASH: Targets and therapy

Nalini Sodum et al.

Summary: NAFLD has become a significant health concern globally due to its rapid prevalence increase and association with metabolic syndrome. Lifestyle changes and drug treatments are currently the main strategies for NAFLD management. The emerging field of epigenetics provides new insights into understanding the pathogenesis of NAFLD, offering opportunities for targeting disease prevention and novel therapeutic interventions through regulating epigenetic modifications.

Kazuhiro Kozumi et al.

Summary: The study conducted global RNA sequencing of liver tissue from 98 NAFLD patients, identifying THBS2 as a potential biomarker for NASH and advanced fibrosis. Serum TSP-2 levels were independent predictors of NASH and advanced fibrosis, stratifying patients based on the risk of hepatic complications.
