Telomeres and Mitochondrial Metabolism: Implications for Cellular Senescence and Age-related Diseases

Xingyu Gao et al.

Summary: Cellular senescence is closely related to the development of age-related diseases, and metabolic imbalance caused by short telomeres and mitochondrial damages play a significant role. Future studies on telomere and mitochondrial metabolism may provide potential therapeutic strategies for age-related diseases.

Association of antidiabetic therapy with shortened telomere length in middle-aged Type 2 diabetic patients

Tahreer Mohammed Al-Thuwaini

Summary: This study investigated the association of antidiabetic therapy with telomere length in middle-aged Type 2 diabetic patients. The results showed that untreated diabetic patients had shorter telomere length compared to treated patients, with insulin therapy showing the shortest telomere length. Logistic regression analysis confirmed the relationship between insulin therapy and shortened telomere length.

The Association between Antidiabetic Agents and Leukocyte Telomere Length in the Novel Classification of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Jiaojiao Huang et al.

Summary: This study explored the new role of telomere length (TL) in the novel classification of T2DM patients driven by cluster analysis. The results showed that the MARD group had significantly shorter TLs compared with other groups, and the TLs of the MARD group were found to be significantly shorter than those of the NONMARD group, with different effects of metformin and acarbose treatments. Metformin more obviously reduced telomere shortening in the MARD group, while acarbose more significantly promoted telomere attrition in the SIRD group.

Telomeres and Age-Related Diseases

Hans-Juergen Gruber et al.

Summary: Telomeres are protective structures at the ends of linear chromosomes, but they progressively shorten during aging, compromising their function. Their role in age-related diseases like CVD, malignancies, dementia, and osteoporosis is crucial. Future studies need to investigate the causality between telomere length and these diseases, while improving analytical techniques.

Telomere Length and Arterial Stiffness Reflected by Brachial-Ankle Pulse Wave Velocity: A Population-Based Cross-Sectional Study

Kyi Mar Wai et al.

Summary: Telomere length is inversely associated with arterial stiffness as reflected by baPWV, suggesting that shorter telomeres may increase the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Individuals with longer telomeres may have a lower risk of arterial stiffness and related cardiovascular risks.

Telomere Length and Oxidative Stress and Its Relation with Metabolic Syndrome Components in the Aging

Graciela Gavia-Garcia et al.

Summary: Research has shown a strong relationship between oxidative stress, telomere length dynamics, and metabolic syndrome, particularly during aging. The multifactorial nature of metabolic syndrome makes treatment challenging, but evidence supports that healthy lifestyles can prevent oxidative damage, telomere attrition, and the progression of chronic degenerative diseases, improving older adults' living conditions.

Summary: Metformin, commonly used to treat type 2 diabetes, may have anti-aging potential and improve healthspan by reducing early mortality associated with various diseases. However, the evidence regarding whether metformin can extend lifespan remains controversial.

Metformin: A Potential Candidate for Targeting Aging Mechanisms

Die Hu et al.

Summary: Aging is a universal phenomenon characterized by a loss of reproductive capacity and declining fitness in all biological organisms. In humans, aging is associated with an increased incidence of diseases, making the aging population a primary public burden of the 21st century. The discovery of novel anti-aging drugs is crucial to delay the aging process and maintain the fitness of the aging population, with metformin gaining attention in recent years for its potential anti-aging effects.
