Efficient interlayer confined nitrate reduction reaction and oxygen generation enabled by interlayer expansion

Ye Zhang et al.

Summary: This study reports Fe-doped layered alpha-Ni(OH)2 as a bifunctional catalyst for nitrate reduction and oxygen evolution reactions. The expanded interlayer spacing facilitates potassium ion intercalation and triggers the reactions. The catalyst shows high ammonia yield rate and faradaic efficiency at the cathode, and reduced overpotential for oxygen generation at the anode.

Oxygen Evolution Activity of Amorphous Cobalt Oxyhydroxides: Interconnecting Precatalyst Reconstruction, Long-Range Order, Buffer-Binding, Morphology, Mass Transport, and Operation Temperature

J. Niklas Hausmann et al.

Summary: In this study, a layered cobalt borophosphate precursor is reconstructed into two different cobalt oxyhydroxide phases, and the electrocatalytic properties of various cobalt oxyhydroxides and phosphate derivatives are compared. The choice of buffer, the number of edge sites not inhibited by buffers, and the morphology are identified as important factors affecting the oxygen evolution reaction activity.

Effects of interlayer confinement and hydration on capacitive charge storage in birnessite

Shelby Boyd et al.

Summary: Nanostructured birnessite demonstrates high specific capacitance and ideal capacitive behavior in aqueous electrolytes, making it a promising electrode material for low-cost, high-power energy storage devices. Capacitive charge storage in birnessite is governed by interlayer cation intercalation, facilitated by the presence of nanoconfined interlayer structural water mediating interactions between the intercalated cation and the birnessite host, resulting in minimal structural changes.

Summary: The study used erythrite as a Co-based OER electrocatalyst to evaluate its catalytic properties during in situ restructuring into an amorphous Co-based catalyst in four different electrolytes, noting that only the carbonate electrolyte can activate the catalyst material. Despite a decrease in TOF by a factor of 28, the number of redox active sites increased by a factor of 56, resulting in a twofold increase in current of the restructured catalyst.

Cation Overcrowding Effect on the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Jun Huang et al.

Summary: The research focuses on the influence of nonspecifically adsorbed cations on the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity and proposes a mechanism to explain the decrease in OER activity with increasing electrolyte cation size. The model, integrating density functional theory, microkinetic submodel, and a mean-field submodel of the electric double layer, is verified against experiments and examined for robustness against uncertainties and variations in model parameters. The decrease in OER activity with increasing electrolyte cation size is attributed to cation overcrowding near the negatively charged electrode surface, highlighting the importance of accounting for local reaction conditions in electrocatalytic reactions.

Energy catalysis needs ligands with high oxidative stability

Agnes E. Thorarinsdottir et al.

Summary: In brief, heterogeneous catalysts exhibit superior stability in large-scale and technologically important processes, but lack the tunability and control of reaction mechanism offered by molecular catalysts. Research in molecular catalysis has focused mainly on reductive catalytic transformations and ligand designs, facing challenges in oxidative instability for energy-conversion catalysis, thus necessitating the design of oxidatively and hydrolytically stable ligands.
