Notch Shape Influence on Damage Evolution of Al/CFRP Laminates Under Tensile Loading: Experimental and Numerical Analysis

Summary: This study investigates the influence of different notch shapes on the mechanical response and damage evolution mechanism during tensile testing of carbon fiber aluminum laminate (Carall). Experimental and finite element simulations are used. The results show that the net notch strength and localized strain are affected by the notch shape and laminate configuration, with the elliptical cavity with the major axis in the transverse direction exhibiting the highest notch sensitivity. Additionally, the study observes matrix failure, delamination, fiber failure, and ductile damage as the main failure modes.

Effects of ply angle and blocking on open-hole tensile strength of composite laminates: A design and certification perspective

Summary: The strength of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic laminates under open-hole tension can be significantly affected by ply angle, ply blocking, and loading direction. Experimental and finite element analysis testing shows that matrix damage can both benefit and decrease strength, with a proposed numerical edge treatment resulting in up to 80% strength increases by suppressing edge failure in certain applications. These findings challenge the validity of standard open-hole tension testing and design rules.

Effect of processing method on the spring-in of aircraft ribs

Summary: This study investigated the spring-in deformation of ribs in fiber-reinforced thermosetting composites through experimental measurements and numerical simulations. The results suggest that removing the castellations on flanges before curing can reduce the spring-in of ribs by generating nonmechanical strains. The findings could also be applicable to curved composite parts with structural holes.

Experimental assessment of temperature effect on open-hole notch sensitivity in woven carbon fiber composites

Summary: This study investigates the influence of elevated temperatures on the notch sensitivity and notch-triggered damage mechanisms in carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composites. Results show a decreasing trend in the elastic moduli and ultimate tensile strength of notched specimens with increasing temperatures, with a surprising deviation at 50 degrees C. Notch sensitivity was found to decrease with increasing temperatures, and two main temperature-sensitive notch-triggered damage mechanisms, transverse cracks, and axial splitting, were observed.
