Levels of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor and Its Association with Pulmonary Embolism in COVID-19

Jazmin A. Guerra-Lopez et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) levels in COVID-19 patients at hospital admission can predict the occurrence of pulmonary embolism. The study found that VEGF levels were elevated in COVID-19 patients and correlated with inflammatory markers. However, VEGF levels were unable to predict the appearance of pulmonary embolism during hospitalization.

Cytokine Storm Signature in Patients with Moderate and Severe COVID-19

Olga Kalinina et al.

Summary: This study investigated the levels of cytokines in patients with moderate and severe COVID-19 and found elevated levels of pro-inflammatory factors, chemokines, anti-inflammatory factors, and growth factors. Patients with severe disease had higher levels of FGF-2/FGF-basic, IL-1 beta, and IL-7 compared to healthy donors. Pneumonia lung injury was positively correlated with levels of EGF, IP-10, and MCP-3, and negatively correlated with IL-12 p40. Pro-inflammatory factors were negatively correlated with the frequency of circulating Th17-like cells and follicular Th cells.

Comprehensive Cytokine Profiling of Patients with COVID-19 Receiving Tocilizumab Therapy

Anna Lebedeva et al.

Summary: COVID-19 patients with cytokine storm syndrome (CSS) and those without formed distinct clusters based on their cytokine concentrations. However, the administration of tocilizumab therapy did not fully correspond to these CSS clusters. IL-1RA was found to be prognostically significant in both groups and may be useful in defining the onset of a cytokine storm and indicating anti-cytokine therapy in COVID-19.

SARS-CoV-2 and Endothelial Cells: Vascular Changes, Intussusceptive Microvascular Growth and Novel Therapeutic Windows

Antonio Giovanni Solimando et al.

Summary: Endothelial activation plays a crucial role in understanding infectious diseases, including COVID-19, and predicting their outcomes and future treatments. Research has shown that endothelial cells have important regulatory functions in viral infections, and studying their phenotypic changes may provide valuable insights for managing COVID-19 and other infections. Endothelial cell injury in COVID-19 is associated with thrombosis and increased vessel contraction, and a novel phenomenon of intussusceptive microvascular growth has been discovered, offering potential for new therapeutic approaches.

Cytokine profile and disease severity in patients with COVID-19

Ali Ghazavi et al.

Summary: Cytokine dysregulation is proposed as the mechanism for COVID-19. This study evaluated serum cytokines levels in COVID-19 patients, finding elevated levels of IFN-gamma, TGF-beta, IL-17, and IL-8 compared to the control group, with significant differences in TGF-beta levels between mild and severe groups, and no significant differences in IL-5 and IL-9 levels.

C-reactive protein and clinical outcomes in patients with COVID-19

Nathaniel R. Smilowitz et al.

Summary: Elevated CRP levels at initial hospital presentation in COVID-19 patients are associated with an increased risk of venous thromboembolism, acute kidney injury, critical illness, and mortality. There is a dose-response relationship between CRP concentration and adverse outcomes, with patients with high levels of both CRP and D-dimer showing the greatest risk of adverse outcomes. Systemic inflammation, as measured by CRP, plays a significant role in predicting clinical outcomes in COVID-19.

A Potential Role of Interleukin 10 in COVID-19 Pathogenesis

Ligong Lu et al.

Summary: One unique feature of the cytokine storm in COVID-19 is the significant elevation of IL-10, which was initially believed to be a negative feedback mechanism to suppress inflammation. However, clinical evidence suggests that early proinflammatory IL-10 elevation may actually play a pathological role in the severity of COVID-19.

Analysis of Serological Biomarkers of SARS-CoV-2 Infection in Convalescent Samples From Severe, Moderate and Mild COVID-19 Cases

Javier Castillo-Olivares et al.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, precise monitoring of antibody responses has become increasingly important, especially with the large-scale vaccine rollout and the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants. Identifying Correlates of Protection (CoP) for SARS-CoV-2 infection and COVID-19 disease is crucial, with virus neutralising antibodies and specific binding antibodies being identified as potential CoP candidates. Results from this study show higher levels of neutralising antibodies in severe COVID-19 patients compared to seropositive healthcare workers with mild or asymptomatic infections. The study aims to identify biomarkers that could differentiate between severe and mild/asymptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infections, with potential implications for future serological studies.

Cytokines: From Clinical Significance to Quantification

Chao Liu et al.

Summary: Cytokines play a critical role in regulating immune and inflammatory responses, serving as biomarkers for many diseases. Quantification of cytokines provides valuable insights into physiological and pathological processes for diagnosis and treatment in both clinical medicine and biology. Advances in in vitro and in vivo assays, biosensors, and quantification platforms aim to achieve real-time multiplex cytokine analysis for biomedical research and clinical practice.
