Clinical Significance and Diagnostic Utility of NLR LMR, PLR and SII in the Course of COVID-19: A Literature Review

Jakub Wiktor Kosidlo et al.

Summary: In recent years, the world has faced the COVID-19 pandemic caused by SARS CoV-2 virus, which is characterized by severe inflammation and potential complications. Changes in leukocyte counts and populations such as neutrophils, lymphocytes, and monocytes have been observed in COVID-19 patients. Indicators like NLR, LMR, PLR, and SII have shown effectiveness in assessing patient prognosis and guiding optimal therapy. This review summarizes the latest knowledge on the diagnostic utility of these inflammatory ratios in COVID-19 patients.

Shukur Wasman Smail et al.

Summary: This study aimed to use routine laboratory and oxidative stress/antioxidative biomarkers as predictors for the mortality of COVID-19. The study found that neutrophils and NLR were higher in critical cases, while lymphocytes were lower in severe and critical cases. In addition, NO and ferritin were predictors of ICU hospitalization, and D-dimer, MDA, and NLR were predictors of mortality.

Interleukin-6 Elevation Is a Key Pathogenic Factor Underlying COVID-19-Associated Heart Rate-Corrected QT Interval Prolongation

Pietro Enea Lazzerini et al.

Summary: This study investigates the short-term impact of IL-6 elevation on QTc in patients with severe COVID-19 and explores the underlying mechanisms. The findings demonstrate that IL-6 elevation can promote QTc prolongation through ventricular electric remodeling. These findings highlight the importance of anti-inflammatory treatment in COVID-19.

Summary: This study identified routine blood-value predictors of COVID-19 mortality, with procalcitonin and ferritin being highlighted as critical features for successful classification of patients who survive or succumb to the disease. The findings suggest the importance of early evaluation and biomarker determination in reducing mortality rates in COVID-19 patients.

Lymphocyte-C-reactive protein ratio can differentiate disease severity of COVID-19 patients and serve as an assistant screening tool for hospital and ICU admission

Jian-Nan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the potential of lymphocyte-C-reactive protein ratio (LCR) as a differentiating factor for disease severity in COVID-19 patients and as an assistant screening tool for hospital and ICU admission. The findings showed that LCR had significant differences among different severity groups and could serve as a simple and objective tool for screening COVID-19 patients in terms of disease severity.

How do routine laboratory tests change in coronavirus disease 2019?

Cuma Mertoglu et al.

Summary: The routine laboratory tests were retrospectively analyzed in a large group of COVID-19 patients. The results showed that inflammatory markers were often elevated and blood cell counts were often decreased in the ICU group, with lymphocyte count particularly low. Lymphopenia is identified as an important risk factor and diagnostic parameter for ICU admission in COVID-19 patients.
