The role of climate, vegetation, and soil factors on carbon fluxes in Chinese drylands

Zhaogang Liu et al.

Summary: Drylands play a significant role in the land carbon sink, but the implications of climate change on carbon dynamics in these areas are not well understood. This study investigates the roles of climate, vegetation, and soil factors on carbon fluxes, and finds that soil factors have a greater impact on carbon fluxes in drylands.

Modelling soil organic carbon stock distribution across different land-uses in South Africa: A remote sensing and deep learning approach

Omosalewa Odebiri et al.

Summary: Soil organic carbon (SOC) is a critical indicator for ecosystem health and carbon management. This study used remote sensing and deep learning to model SOC stocks in different land uses in South Africa. The results showed the spatial distribution of SOC and its contributing factors. Grasslands had the highest SOC stocks, while urban vegetation had the lowest. Commercial and natural forests had higher carbon sequestration capacity. These findings are important for land-use planning and climate change mitigation in South Africa.

Fifty years of Landsat science and impacts

Michael A. Wulder et al.

Summary: Since 1972, the Landsat program has provided 50 years of digital, multispectral, medium spatial resolution observations, playing a crucial role in scientific and technical advancements. The program's early years brought technological breakthroughs and established a template for global Earth observation missions. The knowledge gained from Landsat has been recognized for its economic and scientific value, leading to continuous improvement and increased usage through the introduction of free and open access to data.
